I've believe that immigrants' children are exposed to a greater desire for academic success than children who can trace their American roots back several generations.

That's not the reason. Especially from the poorer countries (save Mexico), immigrants tend to be a select group, as there are huge barriers against international travel placed upon them that selects for the more accomplished/determined individuals. The average IQ of (non-refugee) African immigrants for example is 115 (as testified by an Ethiopian physics professor I once had), 3σ above the mean IQ there. I myself am a second generation Jamaican, like most of the Blacks at these elite schools...
