Were they from immigrant families? Most of the Jewish kids I know who went to those schools were Ashkenazi and American and not immigrant.

They were very much like The Beastie Boys who were typical of the makeup of Stuyvesant in the 80's. American-Jewish and not from "recent immigrant" parents.

Besides, New York City is a city of immigrants. If being an immigrant gave kids an academic advantage, Stuyvesant would be packed with Mexicans, Dominicans, Guyanese, Indians, etc...........
