I think turning Brooklyn into a shuttle is a mistake, and getting rid of it would be horrible. Why get rid of west side capacity? What you gonna do once ESA and NYP are maxed out?

That's actually a very interesting idea. The only things I could come up with involving Bushwick was either opening it as a new west end terminal with an advertised L train connection once GCT, NYP, LIC, and FBA were finally all at capacity...or running light rail over it from Jamaica and extending over the Willy B into the old trolley terminal

Those heading to Kenosha, where are they coming from? Yeah, they've gotta take feeder buses from Kenosha to their place of employment, but what about at their origin? I'm willing to bet they live within walking distance to the train line. The only reason I don't drive from my house in Port Washington to my job in Great Neck is because I work literally across the street from the train station in Great Neck, and the bus is just down the block from my house. If I worked in say, Lake Success, or at NSLIJ I'd probably just drive instead of taking 2 buses and a train.

That last statement is where you're 100% wrong Chris. Look at Metro North. How many people ride to White Plains and hop on the shuttle buses to the different office parks around there? Reverse peak traffic up I-87 is not bad at all yet Metro North recently published something along the lines of trips neither originating nor terminating in the city are a significant portion of their ridership. Along the main line you have industrial parks, offices, etc. You've got SUNY Stony Brook on the PJ line. Yeah, for north-south access LIRR is not and never will be the answer (except for maybe say Valley Stream to central Nassau), but east-west it has strong potential. Not to mention that it was recently published that folks are moving back to the city. If LI wants its economy to remain stable it may have to take a look at how well this sprawl works out for it. I think it's long overdue for some densification around LIRR stations. This will only make things easier for folks to use the LIRR for intra-island commuting. A bus on either end of a train trip sure isn't enticing, but one bus on only one end has a totally different appeal.

Whether it's subway or LIRR, it seems that the Atlantic branch will switch to a separate fare structure. I'd rather it become part of the subway if that's the case.

Joe, it's time for you to shut the fuck up. Chris is far from a foamer and it's time you start showing a little bit of respect. He is 100% right that no Long Islander with full discretion is going to do a bus-train-bus combination. It's a very new way of thinking that most old timers and established LIers simply can not conceive of. THAT BEING SAID, Chris is wrong in many ways as well. For people who either live or work near an LIRR station, a 2 seat ride (bus-train or train-bus combo) is certainly reasonable. I live in Manorhaven and take the N23 to Port Washington and the LIRR to Great Neck, where I work across the street from the station. Takes a total of 30 minutes, where as driving can take 20 minutes (or 12 minutes if I'm really flying) because the bus is timed well with the train and I work near the train station. As of Monday, however, I'm going to be driving because NICE bus completely botched the schedule starting April 8th.

The point I'm trying to make is that suburbia in general needs to be re-tooled. We are all in agreement that a higher capacity mode of transportation is more efficient, meaning its time to start densifying around our RR instead of continuing to destroy open lands for suburbia hell sprawl. This goes for the entire nation, and certain areas have already realized that.

At least a rational post. A station that only has abot 2 or 3 full trainloads of people Currently....with LIC just a walk away...thats all they'll need. Even if only HALF of the current ridership leaves ( and its likely much more but lets be conservative)....thats only a trainload of people left.

Thats great....but you will still only have some small percentage of long island workers that would be 'lucky enough' to be near a station with direct service to hicksville and an office in walking distance of the station.....otherwise they stay in their cars. This idea that they will take a bus to some station to a train to another station to a connecting bus to their workplace....instead of driving from their driveway to the parking lot of their iffice park is foamer railfan fantasy.

I grew up in a two fare zone until it was eliminated when Archer Avenue opened. Moved to Suffolk later. In the first place I lived in Suffolk, there was a bus that connected directly to the train station and it was not a long ride. Very few took that option. Most in my area took their cars to the station instead. Now you could argue more bus service would mean more riders, but I think the folks just prefered the flexibility of driving, especially with a free lot and usually enough available parking.

Exactly correct. People use the train to the city because of traffic and once there there is no easy parking. However if you are in lets say suffolk and work somewhere in suffolk...people prefer the flexibilith the car allows....and with few exceptions...parking is easy.
