That last statement is where you're 100% wrong Chris. Look at Metro North. How many people ride to White Plains and hop on the shuttle buses to the different office parks around there? Reverse peak traffic up I-87 is not bad at all yet Metro North recently published something along the lines of trips neither originating nor terminating in the city are a significant portion of their ridership. Along the main line you have industrial parks, offices, etc. You've got SUNY Stony Brook on the PJ line. Yeah, for north-south access LIRR is not and never will be the answer (except for maybe say Valley Stream to central Nassau), but east-west it has strong potential. Not to mention that it was recently published that folks are moving back to the city. If LI wants its economy to remain stable it may have to take a look at how well this sprawl works out for it. I think it's long overdue for some densification around LIRR stations. This will only make things easier for folks to use the LIRR for intra-island commuting. A bus on either end of a train trip sure isn't enticing, but one bus on only one end has a totally different appeal.
