That's where most of the carborn weight was.

The 46s are good cars.
We're Fast until field shunting was killed on them.
I remember when they were operating in Regulated Mode for 65mph , With Rockwell Trucks..!
Miss that.
Even the new cars cant match that today on nice express runs, though the 160s give it a run along Queens Blvd.

Considering the 5 car sets of R160 are almost equally useless in the eastern division, it wasn't a mistake at all.

I'd argue every 5 car set purchased should have been a 75' car based on the R46.

Makes too much sense . Rode an r46 f from 71 ave to ave u last week . Was thinking about a rebuild . Nyc corrupt one party state is just interested in raising taxes and then skimming more and more money for friends and political supporters

I ride the Brighton daily and this is more or less the case on a regular basis. The R160s on the Q aren't much better along that stretch coming into Atlantic southbound.

Not really.
The East was planned for platform extensions like the rest of the system, but the bottom dropped out of the city's budget(fiscal crisis of the 70s).
However, since then, there was no real excuse for the MTA not to extend platforms along the Elevated sections especially stations that were rebuilt.
It's understandable that some stations need major reconstruction, such as widening like Myrtle Ave/Broadway, Fulton St..

But that doesn't matter.
The MTA has officially turned the Eastern division routes into a "Special case", isolating it from the system, with the exception of the M line.

The problem with 75-foot cars is curve clearance though, right? IIRC on the bridge approach and also the Crescent St curves, there is too much overhang off of 75-foot cars to allow side by side operation.

Otherwise we'd probably see 6-car trains of 75-footers (450ft) in the Eastern division with regularity.

Well, whatever the political aspects are, the state now has another Capital Program with a new car/SMS section.

For the subway,R211/262 programs are set to replace R46/62/62a railcars, with the 68 possibly replaced with option orders on the 211 contract.

I believe retiring the 62s
is a mistake.
These are solid cars, which
can last another 30 years with renovation.

We've seen what a rebuilt R62 could look like, just take a look at the recent "Taking of Pelham 123" film (Denzel Washington).
The subway car used was a R62 with interior/exterior changes to look like an NTT R142. The redesign was extensive.
So much so,the Only give away was the double stainless strips along the car body at the beltline.
For all intents and purposes, that was a R142 built out of an R62 frame.

If Hollywood can do that to one of our subway cars for a MOVIE, then Transit can do it for practical reasons.

Yeah.
Any mediation will likely be expensive, and time consuming. Especially since they are going the way of the dinosaur.
But, the MTA boxed itself in with unitized sets.

However, since the East can't accommodate 75ft cars as a norm, that doesn't say that it couldn't with 60ft 10 car trains,or even 9 car trains.

480ft trains is the self imposed limitations the MTA placed on the east due to the "married pairs" sets built from R27s forward.

Nine car sets can operate Right Now,if there was the Will to do so.

Considering the MTA is considering having passageways between cars which can’t be done with 75 ft cars due to clearance issues, it’s safe to say that the era of 75 ft cars on the NYCTA is coming to an end.

I think it's silly to replace cars because they reach a certain age. But there is an obsession in the world to have the newest things.

Maybe they re-did the timers northbound but have yet to take care of southbound. I hope the TA is still working on eliminating or easing overly conservative timers. And northbound I would hope that modern technology would substitute for the need to stop and pose for the camera north of Dekalb.

Modern technology is there and actually has been since the entire Dekalb/Gold St interlocking complex was redone circa 1960. The problem seems to be gun shy tower operators. It used to be standard instruction to train operators that “what you punch is what you get” but apparently some probably know nothing superintendents want the Dekalb tower staff to wimp out and triple check the route requests.
