The hotel has become famous (?) for two things other than be4ing right across from MSG and NYP. It is where the Maury Show is filmed and also is the HQ hotel whenever the Westminster Kennel Club Show is in town. They set up a large pissoir for the dogs in one of the ballrooms, complete with hydrants and plkenty of sand.

Can't imagine which establishment is going to snap up the contracts for either of those 2 groups...

IIRC there is a door just north of the passageway. But passageway itself it walled off. However there is a crack where the ceiling meets the wall and there is ligh behind it. That is the passage.

I stayed in that dump twice when I worked for the state, the second time after filing a union grievance to no avail. This dump was one of three that New York State taxpayers put employees up when sentenced to a trip to NYC on "official bidness." The Pennsylvania, the Mildew Plaza and if your business took you to the state's offices at WTC, the lovely ALBERT "in the village."

Between the three, the best chance of a night's sleep was the Albert primarily because the "contact high" from the hallways would put you to sleep. Ah well ... one dump down, two more to go. :)

It's funny how modern architecture, an opposition to types such as the Hotel Penn, are often built in their translucent forms to provide a great view of surrounding old buildings as a backdrop for those inside, but have little or no aesthetic value of their own. An example is London's Scotland Yard Building which provides an excellent view of Parliament from many of its offices (as a backdrop), but aside from that rotating sign is quite bland.

Americans are too used to cookie cutter franchises. So that's the problem.

So true, and in every way, beyond just hotels. Last year when I worked in Greenpoint, I was going out with some guys for lunch and saw an old lunch-counter and suggested we go there, and immediately everyone had sour looks and said, we'd be better off going to McDonald's "because we know it". And somebody I know visited Greece, said they were "so lucky" to find a Starbucks there!

Not sure about that (besides some people posting in this thread about an office tower) as Crain's NY had an article last week about a stop to Office->Condo conversions that were planned around Manhattan, because the condo market is very soft right now, and office tower refurbishment is much cheaper than residental conversion.

I'm pretty sure it's 33rd Street. I used to use that passageway all the time and at the 7th Avenue side there is a cross-under under the IRT to the LIRR which was outside of fare control. If I'm not mistaken the cross-under to the LIRR is at 33rd Street. When I worked at MSG as a teen (vendor) the employee entrance was at 8th & 33rd. I would take the 6th Avenue IND and walk all the way from 6th to 8th Underground. The Eastern end of the passageway was right at the PATH Station.

But you were heading for an LIRR train, right? So if you walk from Madison Sq Park up to 33rd and Broadway, went underground and entered the passageway, walked across the passageway and ended up at 33rd and Seventh, why would you go down to 32nd and why would you come up outside? Why wouldn't you immediately go to the LIRR gates at 33rd opposite the exit of the passageway?

The deal is that the way they build buildings has changed, and you would not build that kind of a building today. First of all, people *want* more window view that a double hung sash can provide. Next, we no longer build with masonry all the way up. Yes the RCA building, the Empire State building, and the Chrysler building were all built that way, but now everything is built around a central core, with the prime wall space sold to tenants. Nowadays a building is built with its load on the core, and not on the outer walls.

One might remodel that building, but it would not become a 60 story tower. For that, you have to remove it and start over again.

That's true. They are modern, but they are art deco modern as opposed to these translucent structures which are obviously modern in a different sense.

One might remodel that building, but it would not become a 60 story tower. For that, you have to remove it and start over again.

Which is what they are planning, no? They should remodel it, but it seems they're not interested.

Yes. That is where the tunnel was. It was of course outside of fare control since shoppers from Gimbles Basement could wander in and out of it.

From the NYP side there were a few steps up (to the south) and then a turn into the narrow tunnel to the east. Probably up a few more steps IIRC, since it was at the Basement Level of the Hotel and of Gimbles, and these were above the transit level.

On the HSq side there were steps down past Gimbles Basement entrys from the plaza between PATH Fare Control and IND Fare Control. IIRC, BMT fare control would have been further north. Remember, as built, the fare controls would still have been separate.
