Nice pictures. Hope that you had a good time.

Does Israel consider rail photography to be a big security risk?

I encountered no problems. That said, any of the following may be required of you as you enter a bus station, train station, or Carmelit station:

1. Show passport or other official ID
2. Be wanded with handheld metal detector
3. Open all bags and pockets for inspection
4. Open all luggage for inspection
5. Answer any queustion pertaining to but not limited to the following: where you are from, where you are going, why you are in Israel, how long are you in Israel for, do you speak Hebrew, where did you learn Hebrew, etc.

Unlike in the States, security people in Israel are focused on your behavior, not whether you have metal objects or a pocket knife with you. It is believed that a terrorist would not be able to honestly and calmly answer those questions under pressure during a brief interrogation. It matters less as to what answer you give. Rather, the focus of the agent or guard is on how you behave during the questioning.

Nice pictures. I ride Israrail one round trip once a month, on average. Thanks to you I know now the designation of the equipment I prefer, the IC3. The IC3 trains are comfortable. They're smooth riding and they run in Triplex sets, having shared trucks. (Old-time BMT fans I'm sure are not surprised by the linkage, pun intended.) But they have only one door per side, making for a long time for getting off and getting on of passengers, so best for express runs. The bi-levels are okay, too. The older cars I find to be rougher riding and noisier, but maybe it's just me.

I am generally quite careful to avoid flame-type posting, and do not believe I gave reason for offense when I met you in person; a bit of courtesy in resonse would be appreciated.

For what it's worth, yes, I am Orthodox and do wear the associated head covering, but do not have a beard or wear any particularly "orthodx-type" garb. As a person who wears clothing associated with his beliefs as well, you really have no business making a comment like the one in your post - people in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

It usually takes less than a minute. If you have luggage it'll take longer, maybe a couple of minutes, and make sure you have your passport handy. Questions are asked. The content of the responses and how they are made are considered and usually away you go. It's certainly less, a whole lot less, than trying to get on a plane. This comes from multiple first-hand experiences.

*There are photos on his website a train at the Jerusalem station.*

Noted. I must've missed reading the captions. Was looking for something long distance looking, even though it's not really that far.

*I read that too. Now most trains are no longer through - you can to change to get between Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, and there's a 40 minute layover in the off-peak direction.*
that's the exact article I read.

*They have an English version of the website.*
I've seen it. Maybe I'm picky in what I'm trying to find. I like it when systems give me real maps instead just just a red and blue line. I can't make heads or tails out of their system map to be honest. And when the lines aren't to scale, then my distance and time is off too.

*And the Jerusalem LRT. Can't wait till all 3 are up and running. *

Duly noted.
The Tel Aviv project feels slow to me for some reason.
"This means that work on the project is not expected to start before 2008, and after at least five years of intensive construction, the Red Line trains - the first stage of the project - will leave in 2014."

Looking for that quick quote, I found this recent thing:

Yesterdays News

The plan calls for the electrification of 250 kilometers of track, replacing the diesel locomotives now in use

The National Infrastructures Committee advised last week that it had approved in principle the Israel Railways (IR) plan to begin electrification of Israel’s rail network.
In 2004 it was announced that IR was to electrify 300 route-km within 5 years at an estimated cost of $US350m. Following completion, savings in maintenance and operating expenses of some $US66m annually were projected and eventually it was hoped to have 838 route-km under wires.

...
The first section to be wired is that between Tel Aviv and Modi'in (53km), after which the northern main line from Tel Aviv to Binyamina and Akko will be tackled. This is to be followed by the electrification of an entirely new line - not yet started - from Akko to Karmiel, as well as the recently reopened line to Jerusalem. Another new line, that linking Tel Aviv to Rishon, is also to be electrified.

I rode the Tel Aviv-Jerusalem line. As Terrapin Station posted, there is no longer direct service Sunday-Thursday, and a timed transfer is required in the peak direction. The off-peak direction layover is between 40 to 60 minutes. Luckily, I rode it on a Friday, although it was pretty empty.

There is some information in English, especially if you can find someone's blog about their trip to Israel. Also, Israel Railways has an English version of its site.

HSR is due to open in 2011. Although the current Tel Aviv-Jerusalem line is very scenic, it is not a very viable travel option if you are trying to get to Jerusalem quickly. It will also create a line from Ben Gurion Airport to Jerusalem, which will be good since there has not been direct bus service from the airport to Jerusalem since the new terminal opened a few years ago.

Do they get up to a good speed? My dad told me about the very early days of Israeli trains decades ago. They were lucky to get up to 10 mph and the joke was that if a train was going to derail, which was not uncommon, you could serve lunch and take bets as to which side the cars would fall over. It would take them a while to decide.

I imagine the trains run much better today.

A large portion of the line, especially between Bet Shemesh and Jerusalem is limited to either 50 KPH or 60 KPH (31 and 37 MPH respectively). The Tel Aviv-Nahariya line is much faster. It only takes about 20 minutes to get from Tel Aviv to Ben Gurion Airport, and an hour from Tel Aviv to Haifa.

You are incorrect. It was me, and I introduced myself as subfan. Now, do you wish to respond to my earlier post in this thread?

Don't hold your breath waiting for a response from him, and if he replies, don't expect a direct answer...

Yes, I used it the last time I was in Israel; it was very nice indeed (and much cheaper than a cab) They actually also just extended the airport line to the city of Lod, where you can connect to the line to Beit Shemesh and Jerusalem or the southern lines without doubling back to Tel Aviv.

As to why the IC-3s are used on the line to Jerusalem - the engines on the bi-levels are not poweful enough for the grades on the line.

I'm not, but felt I should provide the opportunity for a civil "I'm sorry".

Yep, French designed, Spanish-built locomotives hauling German coaches alongside Danish/Swedish MUs. If Amtrak had the smarts to buy those Flexliner DMUs you'd have yet another connection between US and Israeli foreign built equipment, and Amtrak (as well as Commuter lines around the country) would have excellent FRA-compatible DMUs. For what its worth the Flexliner that we tested wound up going to Israel. I guess there actually is a developed country in worse shape than the US when it comes to indigenous rolling stock manufacturing and passenger operation. Course since they're something like the size of New Jersey they can rectify the latter shortcoming with minimal investment relative to what we have to do to make an appreciable difference.

As an aside I believe another of our early 1990s ABB test units, the X2000 that ran on the NEC in 1994 (IIRC) wound up going to KCRC in China.
