Answer any queustion pertaining to but not limited to the following: where you are from, where you are going, why you are in Israel, how long are you in Israel for, do you speak Hebrew, where did you learn Hebrew, etc. |

It is believed that a terrorist would not be able to honestly and calmly answer those questions under pressure during a brief interrogation. It matters less as to what answer you give. Rather, the focus of the agent or guard is on how you behave during the questioning. |

I ride Israrail one round trip once a month, on average. Thanks to you I know now the designation of the equipment I prefer, the IC3. The IC3 trains are comfortable. They're smooth riding and they run in Triplex sets, having shared trucks. (Old-time BMT fans I'm sure are not surprised by the linkage, pun intended.) But they have only one door per side, making for a long time for getting off and getting on of passengers, so best for express runs. The bi-levels are okay, too. The older cars I find to be rougher riding and noisier, but maybe it's just me. |

As Terrapin Station posted, there is no longer direct service Sunday-Thursday, and a timed transfer is required in the peak direction. The off-peak direction layover is between 40 to 60 minutes. Luckily, I rode it on a Friday, although it was pretty empty.There is some information in English, especially if you can find someone's blog about their trip to Israel. Also, Israel Railways has an English version of its site. HSR is due to open in 2011. Although the current Tel Aviv-Jerusalem line is very scenic, it is not a very viable travel option if you are trying to get to Jerusalem quickly. It will also create a line from Ben Gurion Airport to Jerusalem, which will be good since there has not been direct bus service from the airport to Jerusalem since the new terminal opened a few years ago. |

I only rode the IC3 when I went from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem, the bilevels don't seem to run that line. I liked them more than the bilevels. I find the lack of good luggage storage on the bilevels to be strange. I saw the older trains but did not ride them, they look like they should be retired ASAP though. |

My dad told me about the very early days of Israeli trains decades ago. They were lucky to get up to 10 mph and the joke was that if a train was going to derail, which was not uncommon, you could serve lunch and take bets as to which side the cars would fall over. It would take them a while to decide.I imagine the trains run much better today. |

A large portion of the line, especially between Bet Shemesh and Jerusalem is limited to either 50 KPH or 60 KPH (31 and 37 MPH respectively). The Tel Aviv-Nahariya line is much faster. It only takes about 20 minutes to get from Tel Aviv to Ben Gurion Airport, and an hour from Tel Aviv to Haifa. |

Yep, French designed, Spanish-built locomotives hauling German coaches alongside Danish/Swedish MUs. If Amtrak had the smarts to buy those Flexliner DMUs you'd have yet another connection between US and Israeli foreign built equipment, and Amtrak (as well as Commuter lines around the country) would have excellent FRA-compatible DMUs. For what its worth the Flexliner that we tested wound up going to Israel. I guess there actually is a developed country in worse shape than the US when it comes to indigenous rolling stock manufacturing and passenger operation. Course since they're something like the size of New Jersey they can rectify the latter shortcoming with minimal investment relative to what we have to do to make an appreciable difference.As an aside I believe another of our early 1990s ABB test units, the X2000 that ran on the NEC in 1994 (IIRC) wound up going to KCRC in China. |
