You can actually now get a train to Jerusalem with a change at Lod since they extended the airport line there, and the change is generally on the same platform. The main issues now with the train to Jerusalem are its speed (or lack thereof) and the fact that it now ends in Malcha, in the very southern part of the city. The new HSR line is supposed to run to the area of the central bus station, and should be much more convenient.BTW, the reason the line to Jerusalem is so slow dates back to Ottoman times. When the decission was made to build the line, the contract was put out to bid, and the low bid was from a French company. When they built the line, they were therefore trying to cut costs as much as possible, and since it was more expensive to build the bridges and tunnels that would be necessary for a faster trip, they just wound around the mountains on the way. The result is a line that is quite scenic, but useless as a commuter line. subfan |

I do realize the reasons why the Jerusalem line is so slow.I highly doubt anyone is going BG Airport-Lod-Bet Shemesh-Jerusalem by train. It requires 3 transfers, plus an additional one to get to where you are actually going. Unless you are trying to save money (which may not be possible, Egged might be less expensive), it is easier to take the bus to Airport City and then connect to the bus to Jerusalem. I'd rather take Egged or a cab until HSR starts up. Is the HSR going to end near the CBS or at the old Jerusalem station near the Old City? I thought it was the latter but I could be mistaken. |

I believe the door arrangement of the Flexliners was corrected on the later Swedish and Danish EMUs purchased for international services after the Oresund Fixed Link was opened. It's worth noting that RENFE in Spain got their Flexliners as married pairs without the jacobs bogie. Also, the Swedish X31K (illustrated above), X32, and Danish ET aren't articulated, while the older Danish ER-IC4s used jacobs bogies under the articulation like Israel's Flexliners. |

If you're riding on Friday, it only requirers one train change, and it's on the same platform. I did it myself a couple of weeks ago (at 7:14 on a Friday morning), and there were at least 10 additional people who did the same thing. As far as where the HSR is supposed to go - it is scheduled to go to a new underground station near Binyanei Ha'umma (Jerusalem Convention Center), right accross from the bus station. The old station in the center of town, on David Remez St., was closed since it was in middle of a residential area, and the powers that be didn't want the high traffic an active rail station would bring - never mind that the station had been there for close to a century previously. The station is still there, but is falling apart. Another point - at this time, the station is only connected to the original tracks, coming in from the south; the new HSR would be coming in from the north, and would be quite difficult to connect to the original station. |

I got on at Lex, and you were filming out the front window. The car was an R-32, and I rode with you down to West 4th, where I got off.Your wife was sitting in the seat opposite the T/O cab, and you introduced her to me, though she was very quiet - she looked quite tired, and only smiled and nodded in response. I do not recall precisely what I was wearing, but I definitely had on a black velvet Kipa (skullcap), commonly worn by Orthodox Jews. You mentioned that you wanted to go past Yankee Stadium the next night to film, assuming the World Series was not yet over. You may want to take a look at the original Subtalk thread SubwaySurf linked to; we went over the whole thing there, and you acknowledged that it was, in fact, me you had met. subfan |

Speeds of 75 mph are routinely made even on locals running between Tel Aviv and Binyamina. Run time from Binyamina to Tel Aviv in the morning rush on the express is about 35 min. On-time performance excellent. Annual ridership in the tens of millions. Service along almost the entire coast, Nahariyya to Ashqelon. Direct service Nahariyya to BG Airport (right under the main terminal) once an hour 6 days a week, to Tel Aviv through to Binyamina twice an hour during most times. Things have changed a bit since your Dad rode Israel Railways. Major problem still to be solved: Grade-crossing elimination. What I expect to become major problem: Need for 4-tracking the Tel Aviv - Binyamina corridor. Ridership has increased by over 10% per annum for each of the past 5 to 10 years (sorry, don't have exact statistics, if anything the 10% estimate is low). |
