This is the first day for the Congress Expressway median route of CTA --today's Blue Line linking the replacement of the former Garfield Park branch to the Logan Square branch via the Dearborn Street subway. At that time the Douglas Park branch was also routed to Logan Square. These two were called the West-North West Route w/ A/B skip stop service from Logan Square to the split where the Douglas Park B Trains went up the ramp and turned South on the previous elevated structure--now called the Pink Line and as before 1958 accessing he Loop via a connection to the Lake Street branch. Congress A trains continued west in the median. to Desplaines Avenue.

This article was written by Wayne-MrSlantR40:

It was on this day June 22, 2009 when WMATA suffered its worst accident ever when a

southbound Red Line train rear-ended a standing train north of the Fort Totten station. Nine people died and about 80 were injured. The moving train, made up of 1K Rohr cars, failed to detect the stopped train and ploughed into it at speed, telescoping the moving train's first car. One of the outcomes of this accident was the placement of all 1K cars in the middle of trains.

Moving train (S) 1079-1078, 1071-1070, 1130-1131 (N); standing train (S) 3036-3037, 3256-3257, 5067-5066 (N).

I never understood why they thought it would be a good idea to have all F trains run express between Bergen and Church, bypassing all the busiest stations on the line. The next schedule change, or complete service change, was to have all F trains run local between 18th Ave and Bergen.

According to the current posted schedule, there are still 2 trains that run express between Jay St and Church Ave in each direction. These 4 trains still show a time for 4th Ave even though they don't stop there! I wonder how often they end up running local anyway.

I rode the F express through Bergen St back in the day and I can't remember if the station was tiled or not back then, but it was pretty dark.

It was one of those ideas that looked good on paper but was not good in practice. Nevertheless it one hell of a great ride express all the way from Jay Street to Kings Highway.

I've posted this undated photo before. Could this BRT photo op have anything to do with the opening of the two eastern most tracks or
is this the first train over the Williamsburg Bridge ? I feel like this is Chambers St. and that could be the tower on the right.

of all the transportation modalities, three track elevated passenger lines directly over streets are only a new york development, i'm pretty sure. and i'm not talking about short stretches either. if anyone knows of any equivalent to the flushing line or west end line anywhere else i'd love to hear about it.

the mcdonald avenue elevated...it's just hard to ignore the notion of two tracks out of three able to carry rush hour loads. considering the history of rail lines in that part of brooklyn it's perfectly understandable that a three track structure that avoided street traffic was built. it's also perfectly understandable that the three tracks would continue to interest transit planners and riders.

Railroad was going through some changes.
The idea was sound.
The operation, not so much.

Read "Routes not Taken" book.
It's a chapter written about the Burke Avenue subway extension and why the BOT decided to go with a three track subway instead of 4.

Basically, BOT said traffic wouldn't warrent 4 tracks, and if the people didn't want That, they will build somewhere else.

It was take what we give you, or you get nothing situation.

The LIRR MP41s were the identical car to the first IRT Hi-Vs, the Gibbs cars with only a slight modification to the truck centers to allow for the inclusion of steps for low level platform loading.

That would be a Willy B train since trains coming from the Southern Div were composed of steel cars while wooden elevated gate cars from the Eastern Div were still allowed in the subway.

The BOT should have at least routed the Concourse line to Gun Hill Rd and across it to White Plains/Gun hill Rd. With an intermediate stop at
Bainbridge Ave to access the Montefiore Hospital area. I read, "The Routes Not Taken", yet the reasoning behind skirting Gun Hill Road was never fully explained.

The express tracks between 7th Ave and Church Ave were constructed for a never-built Ft Hamilton Parkway line to 86th St. It appears that the local tracks were supposed to continue south of Church Ave to the present Culver line connection. I sometimes wonder if the present "GG" route had been intended to run to Coney Island.

At one time there was talk of extending the IND Concourse line past White Plains Rd. farther east but the city decided to buy the old NYW&B ROW instead because it was a less expensive alternative to new subway construction. The city struggled to complete the IND with its debt limit and there were still parts of the originally planned IND which didn't get finished until the late 1940s.

Yes, but what's going on in this photo ? I see a white flag of the head car hinting some kind of "first" run of some kind. I also notice a rope wrapped around one of the poles on the from eluding that this car has trolley poles.

I thinking this was the first train over the Williamsburg Bridge with a ceremony at Chambers St. In a publication, I saw a photo of the first train over the Willy B taken on the pedestrian walkway. I don't recall seeing trolley poles on the roof.

The last stop on the Concourse LIne, 205 St IS at Bainbridge Ave

From nycsubway.org...

205th Street
(D)

This terminal station has a two track, single island platform configuration. Tile colors are medium light green with a slightly darker green border. The line has curved and the 205th Station is oriented east-west.

The 205th Street exit is at the east end of the station. The mezzanine is under the intersection of East 205th Street and Perry Ave. There are two stairways to the token booth and turnstiles; one facing south on Perry Ave. on the southeast corner; the other facing north on Perry Ave. on the northwest corner. The lay-up/turn-back tracks that proceed east from the station under 205th St. are under the mezzanine. A long ramp (50 yds. or so) extends down to the platform level.

The west end of the station is under the intersection of 206th Street and Bainbridge Ave, which is about 80 or so feet higher in elevation. At this point you will have to understand the topography of the area being described. This area of the north central Bronx is dominated by what was known as Valentine's Hill, the highest point being about the intersection of 210th Street and Bainbridge Ave., where Gun Hill road intersects, and all around the Montefiore Hospital Complex. At one time, until the early 30's there was a reservoir where Reservoir Oval Park currently occupies the high ground east of Bainbridge Ave. and 208th Street.

The station entrance at East 206th Street and Bainbridge Ave. is about halfway up this hill. The 205th St. entrance is near the bottom of the (Perry Ave.) hill. The eastern half of the station is cut and cover method construction. The western half is tunnel construction.

The lay-up/turn-back tracks proceed east from the station under 205th St. go about 3 blocks from Perry to Hull Ave, Decatur Ave. and terminate at or under Webster Ave. There is a scissors crossover east of the station. There is a switchman's tower (control room) at the west end of the platform. The west end of the platform exit is reached by a triple level stairway or a correspondingly long escalator to the 206th St mezzanine.

Viewed as an above ground railway, the 205th St Station and turn-back tracks would be the right half of the top of a "T" configuration. The Concourse mainline would be the stem portion. The left side and top of the "T" are composed of the yard lead tracks to Concourse Yard. The yard itself is actually parallel to the Concourse and Jerome Ave. lines, and to the west.

I look at that track map and wonder why they didn't make BPB a 4 track station. You have 4 going in and 4 going out. I went to Lehman for a year and remember getting on an R9 D on the center track if I left at certain times, but it was always a local since I was doing the reverse commute. And it was always an R9, never an R32 or R42, on the center. This was around 1971. Concourse yard was all R9, even then, and usually the oldest and worst of them. The R1s were already gone but the R4 were there. Maybe 100 was still there, IDK.

The route would have serve more riders if the line pushed past 205th st.
Plans called for an elevated tressel to carry cars And the subway to bridge the Bronx River and terrain, since the elevation was higher at perry than across it.

As a matter of fact, the difference is so dramatic, that the extension phased.
The BOT wrestled with the area, especially along Burke Avenue.
Even set up engineering, but money was tight, and the desire to reactivate the Dyre Ave route was a flaming mess.
Playing cheap was the route the BOT TOOK,and Burke was deferred.
Even today, the route is brought up from time to time, but the MTA ignores every effort.
It's Not high priority on their TO DO LIST.

More accurately, "embankment four track" instead of "elevated four track". The elevated portion is south of Sheepshead Bay and continues to Coney Island.

There is a slight error in that tk map. Thr C7 yd lead S/O 205 station doesn’t actually end in a wye. The tke proceeds straight to a bumping block with a single Xover to each of the service tks. That is common on many parts of the IND when a tk descends to meet another so that in the event the switch is not set and the M/M runs the homeball protecting it the train will hit the block instead of switching onto the mainline.
