It's one of the reasons why you see so much extra metal work in that area. There were also a whole bunch of trolley lines that used to run underneath the structures (before my time). In addition you had lots of freight coming into Yard A (where the ESA hole is now) and nearby Degnon Terminal (where LaGuardia Community College is now). When I was a kid, access was so easy. It was (and still is) a railfan's paradise. One can OD on it. |

After 1940, there was a greater need for steel cars due to the Culver line going from an extension of an el to a subway only route. Perhaps city management was not as efficient as it was under the BMT and there were a lesser percentage of cars available on any given day for service. The BMT was not actively ordering new subway cars when the city took over. They did cancel an outstanding order of 80 Bluebirds, but these were intended for el service which the post 1940 abandonments rendered pointless. |

Actually, the BMT did not cancel the order for the remaining Bluebirds, the city did. Also, historical documentation indicated that the Bluebirds were intended for a new high speed local service on the 4 Av subway between 95 St and Gold St using a new loop just N/O Gold St the bellmouths for which can still be seen. |

The BMT and IRT had joint operations on both the Flushing and Astoria lines. Since the platforms were constructed to IRT dimensions, the BMY used the Q cars, which were converted el cars, for service between Main St or Ditmars and Queensboro Plaza. The north (BMT) portion of the station had an across the platform transfer to the BMT standards and triplexes to and from Manhattan. As mentioned, the north platforms were abandoned and then torn down after the 1949 unification which sent all BMT trains to Astoria and all IRT trains to Flushing, but not before all Astoria platforms were shaved back to accommodate the wider BMT trains. The south (IRT) portion contained through subway cars to/from Flushing or Ditmars to/from Times Square. Prior to 1942 the Second Ave. el was part of the south side as well. The upper level north IRT track was not used from 1942-1949 because all trains from Times Square to Astoria used the crossover at the east end of the station, which still exists today. The lower level north track was used for trains from Astoria to Times Square, which used a crossover at the west end of the station. |

The Bluebirds were the BMT's vision of the subway car of the future. While they were to get their start on the els eventually BMT management foresaw them being used all over. The city wanted to standardize everything based on the R 1-9 design. The Bluebird did not fit into their vision. |

"And it also seems that post - 1949, maybe 27s and 30s ran there, but you never see pics of prewar Rs on the Astoria...or even anywhere on Broadway period."Actually, prewar R-types did run on the Manhattan Broadway BMT as the EE from Christie through about 1972. At that point, R1/9s were removed from the EE in favor of 16s, 38s, Mod 40/42s, and the occasional 32. Before the 1954 Culver merge and IND access to Coney Yard, there doesn't seem to be any conceivable way to move IND equipment to BMT trackage and vice verse. Concourse Yard could not have been used because of the narrower IRT gauge. |

I realize that this thread is almost 12 years old, but I had to respond. I lived 1 block north of Queensboro Plaza from 1956 to 1971, and I had a clear view of the station and all the trains. My hobby was watching and cataloging all the different car types that passed through the station. (D-types, Standards, R12s, R15s, and then WF R33s and R36s beginning late in 1963).I definitely did see IND R types running to this station and out to Astoria. However, it was not a regular occurrence. I believe that the connection from the 60th St tunnel to the IND Jamaica line (later used by EE trains) used to flood after heavy rains. In those cases, the R types would be re-routed out to Astoria until conditions in the tunnel improved. I don't have any proof of this outside of my own observance. |

I don't believe the Standards could outrun the Triplexes. The triplexes had more powerful motors and (just from personal experience) they seemed faster. I believe that they were used mainly in express service because of their faster speed.I rode both types very often in the 50s and early 60s, and I believe that the fastest subway rides I ever experienced were on Triplexes on the Brighton Express in the Brooklyn open cut, returning to Queens from a day at Coney Island. Just my opinion of course. |
