It's one of the reasons why you see so much extra metal work in that area. There were also a whole bunch of trolley lines that used to run underneath the structures (before my time). In addition you had lots of freight coming into Yard A (where the ESA hole is now) and nearby Degnon Terminal (where LaGuardia Community College is now). When I was a kid, access was so easy. It was (and still is) a railfan's paradise. One can OD on it.
