I don't believe the Standards could outrun the Triplexes. The triplexes had more powerful motors and (just from personal experience) they seemed faster. I believe that they were used mainly in express service because of their faster speed.

I rode both types very often in the 50s and early 60s, and I believe that the fastest subway rides I ever experienced were on Triplexes on the Brighton Express in the Brooklyn open cut, returning to Queens from a day at Coney Island.

Just my opinion of course.
