Actually, the train operated between 207th Street and Chambers Street-WTC ("E" train platform]. I was on the uptown bound run only, sitting inside R-7A/R-10 prototype car #1575 (naturally). And now, images from that day, including one with noted author and sports broadcaster Stan Fischler in front of R-1 car #100.

Thank you, as always.

The last 3 stations of the Jamaica Line are the first el demolition I can personally remember (I was born in 1968). I thought it was tragic then, and I still do. Even my 9 year old mind couldn't comprehend how eliminating transit access would somehow make the neighborhood better.

I remember that layup track at 160th St. There was a train of BMT standards laid up there, signed as a Broadway-Brooklyn L'c'l, on my first ride out to 168th St. on a JJ in March of 1968.

It wasn't really eliminating transit access but improving it by relocating the line underground along Archer Ave.

To think, all they had to do was to build a subway stop for Jamaica Ave-Hillside Ave and connect to the elevated line with an escalator. It would have saved money and kept a perfectly good elevated line in service.

I have read that on the R1-9 cars, only the bulbs for the emergency lighting (the battery operated lights that came on when third rail contact was lost) were reverse threaded. The lights that were on all of the time were normally threaded bulbs. The theory was that these would be too hot to handle and not subject to being stolen.

Not only that but unlike the BMT and IRT prewar cars which had the lighting circuits wired in groups of 5 so that standard 120V bulbs could be used, the IND lighting circuits were wired so that all 20 lights were on a single circuit. The R-1/9 bulbs were only 30V so they couldn't be used in standard household light fixtures anyhow because that would burn out instantly.

This was mentioned in my own Bus Almanac, but . . .

While the M103 bus was discontinued on this day in 1989 as it was, the TA/MaBSTOA decided to merge it with the M28 - 57th Street Crosstown and redub it the M57, with the western terminus changed from 55th Street and 12th Avenue to 73rd Street and Broadway, going along 11th/West End Avenue as the old M103 had.

Then they should have waited to demolish the end of the El until the replacement was ready to be connected. After all, that's what they did with the section between 111th and Queens Blvd - there's no reason they couldn't have left it intact through 168th until then instead.

They did boom - when its businesses crashed to the floor.

In college Freshman English class in 1974, I wrote a 2 or 3 page composition on the foolishness of it (I knew it was inevitable at that point) that businesses could not thrive if transportation was cut off to get to them. The professor liked it very much.

I agree! The neighborhood around the Jamaica shopping district began to change in the late 1960's. Ending the elevated service in 1977 really killed it off. Relocating the new service under Archer Ave, without an extension back to 168th St/Jamaica Ave, did little to help the situation.

Even easier....take the money used for Archer Ave and run the line down the Van Wyck. Since the new subway and old structure shared a station right at Metropolitan/Van Wyck/Jamaica Ave, the same transfer could have been made.

There was a plan for it.
The next station was Merrick Blvd.. which should have been built, even if the rest of the Phase Two route wasn't.
There was Plenty of things the MTA did at that time, that should have caused them to be Eliminated from leasing and and Operating the Subway system.

The plan was a milking option to take advantage of the times.
The robbed and stole money from the system, invested more into suburban routes..and watched the city sink lower and lower into desperate failure.

The Bigotry displayed by the Transit system,is still on full display for the public to see, with "token booth agents" sitting watching All day/night without interaction with riders in Their capacity.
It's so bad Now, that they react to a passenger asking a question like THEY WERE DISTURBING THEM.

TRAINS... NIMBYS didn't stop the Jamaica lines eastern extension.
The MTA did.

At least, the MTA could have had the new line curve back to Jamaica Ave, after Sutphin/Archer. They should have built stations at Parsons Blvd and 168th St under Jamaica Ave. The current terminal at Parsons/Archer not only screwed up Jamaica el service, but also several bus routes had to be rerouted to Archer Ave, as well. Or, just terminate the IND "E" train at Sutphin/Archer, with a subway-to-elevated transfer like the one at Roosevelt Ave.

True, but That didn't kill the area.
People of Color were living in South Jamaica for over one hundred years.
When it really began development, the planned subway routes were all cancelled by the.city of NY.

My family lived there since 1935,due to the promise of a subway line along 120th Ave.
The subway Never came..but the house is still there, plus major renovations..the place is as good as the day it was built.

My point is,there were a great deal of projects that were halted due to Bigotry.
You Know it just like I do.
Every project slated,
Southeast Queens... Queens Super Express, Utica Ave ... Nostrand Ave Third ave..
Cancelled.
And THAT'S just a few of them!

Queens Center Mall was of no help, and the Hillside Avenue subway was right there to take you there. The Jamiaca el brought you to nowhere of shopping interest, except some fabric stores for tailors near Essex Street.

I think they should have left the IND trains going to 179th, built a simpler single level Archer subway for the Jamaica el, and extended it at least as far as 168th St.

The Utica Ave IND proposal was not cancelled because of bigotry. Back in the early 1930's, public hearings in Brooklyn were held for the IND Utica route. The local politicos and the residents who lived along/near Utica Ave, particularly south of Kings Hwy, wanted an all-subway route to Ave U. Engineers from the IND attempted to explain that the lower topography and high water tables, south of Kings Hwy,
had to be elevated. An all-subway line with enhanced waterproofing from there to Ave U would be very costly- similar to the situation east of Euclid/Pitkin. Ironically, had the project been approved, it still would never have been built. The Depression killed it off and all IND subway construction under Fulton St, east of Lewis Ave was halted for about a year. In 1952, the Utica subway proposal was resurrected, but the same demands for an all-subway route shelved it again.

Thye original intent was to have the IND take over 2 tracks of the LIRR ROW for service out to Springfield Blvd so Parsons is only a “temporary” terminal.

I remember seeing the end of the exposed tunnel from the LIRR after it wrapped around that huge red-and-white striped tank at Liberty Avenue.
