The Utica Ave IND proposal was not cancelled because of bigotry. Back in the early 1930's, public hearings in Brooklyn were held for the IND Utica route. The local politicos and the residents who lived along/near Utica Ave, particularly south of Kings Hwy, wanted an all-subway route to Ave U. Engineers from the IND attempted to explain that the lower topography and high water tables, south of Kings Hwy,
had to be elevated. An all-subway line with enhanced waterproofing from there to Ave U would be very costly- similar to the situation east of Euclid/Pitkin. Ironically, had the project been approved, it still would never have been built. The Depression killed it off and all IND subway construction under Fulton St, east of Lewis Ave was halted for about a year. In 1952, the Utica subway proposal was resurrected, but the same demands for an all-subway route shelved it again.
