I have read that on the R1-9 cars, only the bulbs for the emergency lighting (the battery operated lights that came on when third rail contact was lost) were reverse threaded. The lights that were on all of the time were normally threaded bulbs. The theory was that these would be too hot to handle and not subject to being stolen. |
