Wow I was on that last R40 for a while that day.
I recall that several folks were riding as well but got off for the debut of that 2009 version of 1,2,3

They were ugly even when new, but became way uglier after they were defaced. They were fast and loud, especially when the doors between the cars were kept open, and they often had to be, because the fan covers blew the air across the ceilings and down the walls and not directly on the riders, so the cars were very hot in the summer. And the slant ends were very dangerous to walk between before the additional hardware was added, and even then it was quite a distance from one interior to the other. The seats were a new design: the short backs allowed for larger side windows, but the flat bottoms were very uncomfortable. (This was corrected in the R42s, which kept the short backs but put back the contoured seat bottoms of the R38s.) Also notice the complete absence of hand-holds near the doors. Clearly the designers never rode in a packed rush-hour train.

They were victims of deferred maintenance till the time they were GOH'ed.

Just like their SMEE counterparts, they were ran into the ground due to lack of reliability with the R44/46.

All this changed post GOH.

I don't miss the slant R40s they were junk from the day the TA put them in service until the day they were retired. The A/C worked well though on those cars that had them as delivered.

Pre GOH, the R40/42 were garbage because transit ran the crap out of them (a lot of it having to do with poor performance of the R44 and the truck issue with the R46) and of course crap maintenance.

Post GOH the CI rebuilt R42's (4840-4949) were universally panned by the crews as rattletraps. In the back of some cabs there was a gap in the flooring where you could see the roadbed. Naturally that increased the noise and cold air into the cab in the winter. There were also issues with some t/o's (particularly visitors) in getting the reverser in and out of the slot. This group of cars were among the first to be retired as a fleet when there were sufficient R160's on hand.

The M/K 42's were pretty good. The advantage of all R42's was you could adjust the seat vs. the R40 that you couldn't. The R42's quickly went downhill
once the R143's go delivered because they were prioritized with barn space for weeks at a time even before they saw service.

The R40's, even though I didn't operate them often, were sweet. Smooth acceleration and great brakes. Seldom did I ever have to "fight" with one. Out of all the contracts GOH'ed, the R40's, particularly the slants, had the greatest degree of improvement of all the GOH's.

Between the time both contracts were retired in 2008/09 (except for 4840-4949) till I retired in 1/14, I for one did miss operating these cars.

I was never a big fan of the R32's both pre and post GOH.

I remember when they were new. Funny thing, my mother had to point out the large magenta F on the side as a slant Fred was pulling into 34th St. one Saturday. I was so used to looking above the storm door for route and destination signs that I didn't notice that huge F sign, if you can believe it. My sister even liked them, and she is definitely not a subway buff. We rode on that train one stop to 42nd St.

Except for a one-stop hop from 34th to 42nd on a new slant Fred train, I didn't ride on them until much later, when they pushed the R-10s off the Abbott. Never will forget my most memorable slant ride on Easter Sunday in 1978. This A train rocketed up CPW. I wish I'd timed that run; it had to be no more than five minutes.

I did work the E for 4 straight picks, 2 years with a late AM penalty job in the mid 2000's with mostly R32's. Getting an R46 for a half trip was a treat.

The Phase II's NY Air Brake trains had a habit of holding 5 lbs. of air unless you put the brake handle into full release, wait a few seconds and bring it back to running release. They would sometimes stick in the self lapping mode when you would want to let off some air. At least the Westinghouse Controller was nice.

But from my beginning of making t/o, and others before me will attest, the cars bounced because they were too light for their trucks, although they were a bit better after GOH & air conditioning was added because that made them heavier.

With that said, air conditioning was spotty. They had a hard time remain cool with loads of passengers and doors cycling every few minutes. Lay the train up with hot cars: with doors remaining closed and no passengers inside, the cars were able to cool down.

Never picked a line or worked overtime on a line that used them.

Although I never personally saw them, I was told that there were a couple of hybrid front bonnets for the R 40s which when installed would have mede them a modified straight front like the 40Ms but if they ever did exist, they were definitely never installed on any cars to my knowledge.

Did you ever drive the 32s? (I think you said you worked the F once, while that was mostly 46s, I'm sure a 32 set made its way over there once in awhile)

Speaking of usually F = R-46 and E = R-32, I was in NYC for a week in July 1999, stayed out the then-Holiday Inn Crown Plaza by LGA. When I had to go into Manhattan, would take Q23 to either 103 St on the 7, or Continental on the Queens Blvd line. One time I needed the E, as I was walking down the stairs, an R-46 arrived on the s/b Express track. Now, I had been studying nycsubway.org and (I think) reading SubTalk, so I was like, that's an F, so I leisurely strolled down the stairs. As the train slowed, I could see the destination sign saying "E to WORLD TRADE CTR". Oops! I quickened my pace (though I needn't have bothered, we dwelled at CTL for a few minutes (hold lights may have been on)

I sure remember those Slants on the E (and sometimes F) in 1975. The slanted front and the noise made the E seem somehow like a SERIOUS EXPRESS train. I don't know if that makes sense to anyone else.

For the rest of their lives, I thought they looked out of place on all-local routes, like the L or W. In December 1999, I rode a Slant J train from Broad to Essex- the only Slant J I ever saw. The letter "J" looked quite different than it did on the R40M/R42. On the Slant, it really looked like a hook...

You too?
I rode a slant 40 on the J and Z a few times for the whole route!

It was strange...to see these cars on Eastern Division routes.
I grew up riding them along the EF lines.
The A during the early 80s got em,the CC had them for a short while after the 32 left.
The rebuild sent them to the BMT southern Division, with some heading to the east for L and M services.
When the R143 started coming in,the Mod 40 and the Slants were all moved to the south.

I really loved them on the A..its like they were built for Any IND EXPRESS ROUTE .

Originally the R40s and R42s were delivered with signs in the Standard font. After the GOH when new sign scrolls were installed with smaller letters, the font was still Standard. (The capital letters J, Q, and R, and the numeral 2, are the easiest to distinguish.)

Because the hook on the J was so small in Standard, they converted to new scrolls in Helvetica:

Some station signage is still in Standard:

Most now are in Helvetica:
