Re: Tuscarora Almanac for June 12

They were ugly even when new, but became way uglier after they were defaced. They were fast and loud, especially when the doors between the cars were kept open, and they often had to be, because the fan covers blew the air across the ceilings and down the walls and not directly on the riders, so the cars were very hot in the summer. And the slant ends were very dangerous to walk between before the additional hardware was added, and even then it was quite a distance from one interior to the other. The seats were a new design: the short backs allowed for larger side windows, but the flat bottoms were very uncomfortable. (This was corrected in the R42s, which kept the short backs but put back the contoured seat bottoms of the R38s.) Also notice the complete absence of hand-holds near the doors. Clearly the designers never rode in a packed rush-hour train.
