*sigh* What happened to the policy of getting the homeless out of GCT during the day?

Welcome to Deblasio's NYC. I didn't think NYC could ever elect a worse mayor than Dinkins, but here we are...

Deblasio doesn't control GCT. That would be Cuomo. They both need to go.

There's always the possibility that it's an alarmist article. I haven't seen any homeless people in GCT at 5:30 PM, but I don't usually go through the lower level, which is presumably where the issue occurs.

The Gov controls MTA and GCT , it is deballsio who must keep the homeless out. Let him put the homeless up in Gracy Mansion or in some of his other homes, after all, he IS a socialist, and so even his house belongs to the people.

The problem, if it exists, is that on the lower level there are numerous tables and chairs for food court patrons to use to eat at. It's an open invitation for homeless to occupy those at night.

I was thinking that since M/N is under FRA federal jurisdiction and MTA police AFAIK have federal police powers then GCT should be also meaning that homeless trespassers should be able to me prosecuted under federal law where the bail exemption and other local laws don’t necessarily apply.

Cuomo votes for this bail reform law . It is actually a series of laws Cuomo signed into law . The most disturbing is the requirement for the da office to turn Over all witness and victim info to the defense attorney . There has already been multiple incidents where victims and witnesses have been assaulted

A second terrible thing is they changed the meaning of violent crime to me using a weapon such as a knife or gun . Simply kicking someone’s head until they are unconscious is not violent according to the law

This will drive down the reported crime numbers . If the criminal knows your name and address and is going to be released anyway , why report the crime . There is broken car windows every day near my job . Street cleaning is done twice a week

Defiant black and Latino state senators claim they will never make common sense changes to the law . They are comparing the police to slave recovery squads .

In the end , low income black and Hispanic people who don’t have the ability to move will be the ones who pay the price with their life and lack of jobs . Already have my house up for sale . Heading to nj

Over-reach. No US Attorneys office would devote any resources to prosecuting cases like that. The MTA police are primarily a NYS police agency, with additional commissioning in CT. The fact that they are undesirable to some people does not mean they are committing an offense.

FYI 35-40 other states already have that requirement.

We live in a surveillance state. Pre-trial detention is pretty much unnecessary and a waste of taxpayer money.

Also if the GCT Businesses don't like it they can relocate, cause the rents to drop and get something more affordable in their place.

Is that requirement limited to within 15 days? Usually a lot of this would be settled out of court and there would be no need to ever release that info.

Either way I can assure you I am never going to witness a crime in NY.

Baltimore's homicide counts post Freddy Grey have surpassed even the crack era. Virtually every single one of those souls were 1) poor and 2) African-American. Yes, the BPD is corrupt to the core and needed institutional change, but let's speak the truth: the elites only care about challenged communities if there is some left wing class warfare narrative to attach to it.

LL is where all the food is and some of it's pretty good, especially for a train station. Food requires seating, which was removed from the upper level. Seating is also required for some us olds/disablesds who have problems after standing or walking for any period of time.

Guess what's happening to the lower level. I didn't read the article and won't bother, but yeah the "homeless" are definitely present and increasing in GCT.

Guiliani did no such thing.

In times past, the mentally ill were in institutions which, whatever their faults, were located in large, pleasant tracts outside the city and protected the unwell from their worst instincts and drug-seeking. Criminals other than those in organized crime were locked up when the low-tech means of the day could catch them. If you wanted a job there was some sort of work that would pay for some sort of housing, you were not competing with people whose real home is a village in Ecuador and who will live 4 to a room here to save what amounts to a significant haul back home.

Chaos and degradation benefits only the disrupting class, who thrive on the misery of others. Recall, who in the 20th century said "The worse, the better." ?

Its not that easy. First they have to get out of their lease and then find a place to relocate with all the moving expenses involved.
And its not a given that the rents (in GCT) will automatically decrease. The homeless problem is citywide, not just in GCT. In other words, since we have a homeless problem here (in GCT),we're not any different than anywhere else in the city. The real estate market will stay stable.

Those institutions cost money. The Trump Party would rather keep that money in billionaihes’ pockets, or in their campaign’s pockets when donated by those same billionaihes.

As for your antiïmmigration screed, the era that coïncided with massive middle class prosperity also coïncided with the era of minimal immigration. I doubt that’s a…something that happens at the same time without causation.*

But if GCT has a bad reputation and still costs a lot, that could drive away vendors and either force rents down or make the MTA do something about the problem. The situation is much less complex than the NYC real estate market, so supply and demand is more likely to apply.

Yes, even if it's hard to get out of an existing lease, GCT will have great trouble leasing to new stores if the area gets a bad reputation.

It shouldn’t be that difficult to get out of a lease if the conditions make it prohibitively difficult or downright impossible to conduct a business.

Don't be so sure. Its a subjective thing. If the business says its impossible to do business & the MTA says different, now what? If there was a waiting list for businesses to get in, then the lease might be able (with a substantial $$$ penalty) to be torn up, but with the bad press nowadays about the conditions at GCT, I doubt that any new merchants are lined up at the MTA realty office. I mean a prospective new tenant has to be thinking , if everything was so good, why leave?

Speaking of urban homicide victims, a couple of years ago the American Medical Association conducted a research report on the fatality rates of different firearms calibers. Its researchers looked at all 220 firearms homicides that occurred in Boston from 2010 to 2014 and compared them to an equal number of nonfatal shootings.
The most interesting finding is that the homcide *victims* had an average of 13 prior arrests.

As for the broader issue of skells in Grand Central, a definitive solution to the skell problem there and elsewhere is impossible unless the Supreme Court re-criminalizes vagrancy.

It was the great Republican Cuomo Sr who closed all of NY's mental institutions.

That said it's not the Federal Government's job to intervene on State level matters, whether it be quality of life issues in coastal cities or whether or not one can buy weed or heroin at the local CVS. It's why I get annoyed when people blame Pelosi for SF being a shithole... Pelosi's role is to represent SF's wishes in matters of national significance, not petty local issues like poop and homeless problems.

Many parts of life ain't pretty. We can have a tantrum and make them worse (close the asylums, send the trouble into the public) or improve the unpretty parts (jails, asylums, etc) to the extent of our ability and will to do so. The People, or some of them, have made their choice. Al of us below the celebrity/political class live with the results.
