I just checked Google maps for the area and it looks like there are 2 tunnels under the mainline LIRR ROW that are in the right position and angle to be underpasses for subway tracks coming from Qns Blvd. The area northwest towards Qns Blvd is too overgrown to see any more details from the satellite photo.

It wasn't meant to be funny.
I found the LOL response a bit heckling (and yes, I know - one might respond take it for what it was, just a wisecrack, or the old "too-sensitive" remark, or "have a thicker skin")

I was just explaining that hey, anyone can forget stuff, temporarily (for whatever reasons) from time no matter how obvious it may otherwise be, or just something that is commonly known.

One serious issue with using the RIW for LIRR service is that the LIRR has told the consultants that the LIRR main linen is bac=sically full, regarding capacity, and thus adding RBB service would require eliminating existing trains.

"The LIRR Service Planning staff explained that if RBB train service were to operate, there would need to be an existing tradeoff with existing service. It is the common practice of the LIRR service planning group to show the impact on existing service by eliminating trains. This is most commonly done when introducing a new service plan to a line that is already at capacity. In order to provide slots for the RBB service, the SYSTRA team made certain assumptions (listed below) and took trains off short headway branches in order to minimize system-wide impacts. LIRR staff cites that, as a benchmark, a 12-car commuter train (operating on other LIRR branches) carries a seated capacity of 1,272 passengers. If 15-minute RBB service frequencies are to be provided, it is possible that 5,000 customers per hour could be displaced. Based upon the current assessment, during the peak hours of commutation, in the peak direction, four trains currently carrying commuters would be eliminated to accommodate LIRR RBB service. Additionally, at least two commuter trains would need to be eliminated for the reverse (non- peak direction) during the same period. This could mean the displacement of as many as 7,500 current LIRR passengers. As part of this assessment, it was assumed that displacement of current trains would come from the Hempstead, Huntington, Ronkonkoma and Babylon branches, with each branch losing one train during each of the peak hours weekdays in the peak direction.
In order to incorporate future LIRR RBB service, the resulting LIRR branches will experience the following effects:
• Ronkonkoma Branch would have the number of Manhattan bound trains reduced from 25 to 21, or 10 minute headways to 11 minute headways.
• Port Jefferson/Huntington Branch would have the number of Manhattan bound trains reduced from 17 to 13, or 14 minute headways to 18 minute headways.
• Hempstead Branch would have the number of Manhattan bound trains reduced from 10 to 8, or 24 minute headways to 30 minute headways.
• Babylon Branch would have the number of Manhattan bound trains reduced from 36 to 30, or 7 minute headways to 8 minute headways.
• For eastbound reverse peak trains, Huntington Branch was reduced from 5 to 4 peak period trips from Manhattan and Ronkonkoma was reduced from 8 to 7 peak period trips from Manhattan."

It would be relatively easy to adapt Woodhaven Blvd. station as an express stop, and a convenient transfer point from QB express service to RBB trains. The trackways already exist.

As someone here mentioned the other day, the Woodhaven local platforms could then be used as a shuttle terminal for late night operations, though it would be a big expense to install new switches across the line.

It would probably cost only another $1 billion and ten years of night and weekend GO's to widen the tunnels underneath Queens Blvd to allow for connecting both the express and local tracks. What's a 12% cost difference among friends?

A better sell for the LIRR would be to turn the whole kit & kaboodle back over to LIRR service, and truncate the subway at Howard Beach. The higher speeds and direct midtown access would make up for longer headways (realistically, half-hourly service isn't much worse than the 3TPH off-peak they have anyway).

As for potential complaints regarding a higher fare, they could keep the NYCT fare control for the Rockaways portion and only collect LIRR fares after Howard Beach, offering a free transfer to/from the A there.

If they wanted to do a subway extension on the cheap, they could route the subway right up to the westbound LIRR trackway at 63rd drive, have a single platform, and do an out of system transfer to 63rd drive station. The trains could be an extended (H) shuttle from Rock Park to 63rd drive. Is it ideal? No, but if it shaves off 3/4 the price tag and is half as useful, still a huge win.

You can offset some of the lost service to Forest Hills by extending the G train to Forest Hills. From what I understand, the biggest bottleneck for Queens Blvd local service is turning the trains around at Forest Hills. With a line like the M diverted to the Rockaways, that should increase the available capacity.

The speed issue into Manhattan is a big deal. The only thing I can think of which would add a faster route is to try something similar to a previous suggestion: run a connecting el to the J at Crescent St, with an extra track for peak express service. This track would run above the current J el until Broadway Junction, where it would merge with the current center track. This would allow express service all the way to Marcy Ave. Alternately, you can drop the express track and have it divide the skip-stop arrangement with the J, and go full express after Myrtle.

And like the subway has space for more trains on their Queens Lions?

Question is: What Priorities.

Is it Airport to Manhattan, then the LIRR is the way to go, with a ticket system similar to what NJT is using out at Liberty. If so very few intermediate stops are required or wanted.

On the Otter hand... If more service to the neighbor hood is required and/ or is your goal, then the MTA route is the way to go, but a 45 minute ride to the Apple of Big seems obnoxiously long.

Besides all of those people are already being accommodated on something, yes.

LION votes for the LIRR to serve the RBB.

And why can't you see that.

NJT handles Liberty Airport Quite well, and LIRR already handles Belmont Park service.

LOIN thinks the LIRR is the better choice if you are thinking of a JFK-NYC service.

If you are thinking of a neighborhood subway service that happens to stop at the airport, the (A) train already does that, and the time into the city will be about the same (45 minutes) with a subway connection vs 25 minutes on an LIRR connection.

Who is going to pay the airport shuttle fares?

You use a combined ticket, about $10 for the air train with transfer to the LIRR to Manhattan. The same fares that the peeps in Jerseland pay.

As for neighborhood fares, Id, rather do something else witht he (A) line for a heck of a lot less.

Consider the layout of Woodhaven Plaza.

The local platforms in doth directions have builtin structures to be come express platforms. So the local tracks would go behind the current wall, the current express tracks would switch to the current local tracks.
What happens to the then unused express tracks in both directions?
They descend from west to east and both turn south to a point in the fast area separating the track-age of the old Rockaway branch.

I believe the platforms would be widened to the express tracks so that express trains can stop there. It is the current local tracks in the station that will become unused.

If you look at the tunnel construction, the girders between the local and express tracks have been placed at the same wide separation as the platform girders, as the IND planners anticipated this becoming an express stop one day.

ROAR ?

Making the RBB subway only would have stations that the LIRR wouldn't have for that commute to JFK.

Tying the RBB to QBL would give those along the ROW more subway options to Manhattan or the Rockways. And for those NIMBY's who don't want either LIRR or subway service, won't their property values rise ?

The Queens Bypass route is the only option for RBB.
The 63st line and tunnels will finally be utilized for What it was built for.

How about achieving optimum results with CBTC ?

CBTC is coming.

The local platforms in both directions have builtin structures to be come express platforms. So the local tracks would go behind the current wall, the current express tracks would switch to the current local tracks.

Are you saying there are track ways behind the platform walls, much like Lexington Ave and 63rd St ?

The right idea for EWR is extending Path. Single seat service from many areas direct to the terminal.

I agree with you. But the JFK AirTrain to Jamaica is actually pretty busy. Just not busy enough to merit a dedicated railroad train.
