Arnines on the BMT - photos - early years

Posted by Express Rider on Sat Aug 24 15:34:52 2019

IND cars on the BMT during the early years (1930-31 & late 1940s): I'm including photos from these eras below, from nycsubway.org. These have all been viewed by people here many times, but just thought I'd include them since this has been discussed recently in threads.
There's at least one other photo of an R-1 with a BMT #4 front destination sign at Stillwell Ave., next to a BMT Standard, that I could not find, either at the site, transit museum photo archives, or by google image search.

R-1 #103 - Sea Beach Line 1930-1931 (George Conrad collectionn)

R-9 #1759 - 39th/Beebe Aves. 1952 (David Pirmann collection)

R1-9s Astoria bound at 34th Street/Herald Square (David Pirmann collection)

R-1 #170 - Queensborough Plaza (Ed Watson/Arthur Lonto Collection/
collection of Frank Pfuhler

R-1 #129 - Queensborough Plaza (George Conrad Collection)
Notes: Former north side of Queensborough Plaza- 4th Ave local service terminating at QBP. R1 cars on loan to BMT, would return to IND in late 1948 for Euclid service. Photo probably during 1948. Foreground track would become Astoria BMT track.

Those roof vents on 103. Don't recall seeing them like that.

Didn't know they had them going back that far. I've seen late 60s early 70s pics of that car with those vents but I thought it was because of the axiflo fans.

The roof vents were installed, along with the interior axiflow fans, during the late 1940's or so. The picture of #103 is from a fan trip operated on 10/30/1971.

Thank you for the info.
It did say fantrip in the captioned notes/info. below the original photo; however, being in B & W, I thoguht maybe the fantrip into. was a mistake.
Well, guess it was my mistake. The black and white did rally make it look vintage though.

I hope someone will be able to find that other photo - the one I wrote about with the R1 at Stillwell ave. with IIRC, that number 4 sign up front, sitting next to an AB.

The top photo in particular looks like an early 1970's fan trip. The 'CONEY ISLAND' type smacks of a Transign roll sign - and Transign didn't exist until 1959. Also, when the eight IND R-1's were loaned to the BMT for a few months in 1951 they had, on the top left side, a roll sign from a Triplex, thus there was no 'Sea Beach' right below the 4.

EDIT: I see 'Steve B-8AVEXP' dated this top pic to Oct. 30, 1971.

Some Arnines (I think it was about 100) were transferred to the BMT starting in 1948 when the R-10s arrived. This helped to alleviate the BMT's chronic shortage of steel subway cars. They ran almost exclusively on the #2 - Fourth Ave. Local route. Most of them went back to the IND when the R-16s arrived in 1955, although they did show up occasionally on the Fourth Ave. Local until the late 1950s.

Yup.
My first ride that I can remember was on the QJ heading to Brooklyn.
I remember watching my Dad crossing the tracks at 168th from that old building there..and being happy to see all of us.
Gave Mom a big hug/kiss...grabbed my head with that silly "Hey SPORT!" thing he always did...and kissed my sister on the top of her head.
What I clearly remember about that day was the R32 sitting on the other track.
Never saw one of those before and I asked him about it. EVEN asked him how much it cost!

It was a good day.
Pops even gave me a dollar when we got off at Halsey st heading to the supermarket.

Would there possibly be any photos of the R-9s in color taken when the cars were brand new pre steel dust? I say R-9s simply because they would have been the only cars of the R-1/9 group that would have been still relatively new at the time the earliest color film was developed.

The “off property” building housed the Tower and the T/D office. During at least the AM rush and possibly the PM rush, the T/D would operate from a small shed at the Manhattan end of the platform and the ATD would remain in the office tending to the train register sheets. As an aside, most documentation indicated that the Jamaica interlocking machine was like the machines at Essex St and Chambers were manufactured by Federal Switch and Signal. At some point, the machine at Essex St was replaced by GRS machine but from where I don’t know. According to a Tw/M at Jamaica I spoke to the Federal machine at Jamaica was replaced by the GRS machine removed from Gold St (Myrtle Av) circa 1960 after the Dekalb Av area was realigned. The Federal machine at Chambers remained until Chambers interlocking was completely replaced and placed on Essex St’s board.

Why would that have been the case since photos from circa 1949 show the “4 Ave” under the number 2 so why wouldn’t the 4 have “Sea Beach” under it. Also If I recall seeing somewhere, the R-1s and R-9s that went to the BMT at that time only had the BNT routes and destinations for the 4 Av Lcl spliced into the IND roll signs and no other BMT routes.

That may have been true for the T-1s circa 1930, but As I mentioned in my other post, the R-1s and R-9s sent to the BMT circa 1948 did have the BMT route names under the number. Phots back this up.

That would be an interesting search subject.
Might have been taken by an enterprising* railfan circa 1940, or finding a possible color photo taken by the manufacturer (don't have the R9 manufacturer name at my fingertps), residing in their files, or in the manufacturer's photographer's private collection (much digging for either of those sources probably!)

*one who was a "go getter" and would have sought out color film, which I understand, was brand new for consumers, hard to get back then, and very expensive.

I feel the same way. I was lucky to ride the Q's on Myrtle Ave, AB's on the Canarsie & Myrtle Chambers, and the Steinways - WF and Lo-V's on the 3rd ave el. during the last couple of years of service for each, 1967-1969.

I missed the Multis, and Hi-V's (maybe rode them once - east side local - I've posted this before, but wouldn't nave been aware of them) and probably rode Lo-V's in mainline service, but again, too young to be aware of car differences.

I’m not sure, but I think by then the hand throw switch connection at Ditmas on the Culver was in place. Otherwise they would have had to be pulled by an SBK electric loco to the 38 St dock and carfloated to 207 St Yd. A similar move from the BMT via 38 St was probably done with the Qs when they were transferred from the Flushing Line to the IRT for 3 Av El use. In that case, they would have been carfloated to 148 St Yd.

When I was a pre teen, I lived along the Bway IRT and my grandmother lived in the south Bronx so the only kind of cars I saw were Hi-Vs on Bway and Pelham or Flivvers on the 7 Av/West Farms all of which had the big brass controller handle with the true “dead man’s button” in the top of the knob. Then one Saturday afternoon I insisted on taking The Bway to the Lex Exp to get to my sister’s in Woodlawn instead of our usual A to the D at 145 St. At G/Cent, the M/M on the Lex Exp had his cab door open and for the first time I saw a Lo-V controller and I thought to myself “that doesn’t look like any IRT controller I ever saw.” As I got older, I got to learn the differences between the various similar looking IRT cars. At some point, I might have even ridden a Composite on the Polo Grounds Shuttle but since I was only 5 at the time they were removed, I probably thought they were just another normal IRT car.

That's a very touching story. Thanks for sharing.

As for me, I hated seeing the R9s on the BMT. Those ugly cattle cars should have been kept underground, on the IND, away from the eye of the general public.

I would have gotten on the QJ Brightliner heading for the Brighton.

The only color image found on Dave's website to date is this one of the IND cars operating on the World's Fair Line. By the time this picture was taken, it is no doubt that the steel dust had already set in on the fleet.

According to Mr. Henry Raudenbush there was a single track connection between the South Brooklyn Railway and the IND South Brooklyn Line just outside the portal south of Church Avenue station. This is opened in 1937 and was used for the deliveries of the R7,R-8, R-8A and R-9 cars.

This is a spectacular photo, both for the color and of course, the history.
I have used my library's color printer to make an 8 x 10 copy that I have mounted on my wall - only a railfan would do this! :)

The revenue service connector did not open until 1954 but there was a switch connection (probably hand throw) between the N/B Culver lcl tk and the IND at the N/E of Ditmas for a few years before that.

Thanks. The carfloat method was what I figured if there was no other direct BMT-IND connection back in 1948.
I did not know about the manual hand thrown switch at Ditmas - that's interesting (maybe read about it here earlier, but never saved the post and so wouldn't have remembered it).

I remember sometime in the last couple of years or so, there was a lengthy thread on the connceting ramp between Church Ave. and the Culver line - when it was completed, and when was the initial trackage etc. installed.
