When I was a pre teen, I lived along the Bway IRT and my grandmother lived in the south Bronx so the only kind of cars I saw were Hi-Vs on Bway and Pelham or Flivvers on the 7 Av/West Farms all of which had the big brass controller handle with the true “dead man’s button” in the top of the knob. Then one Saturday afternoon I insisted on taking The Bway to the Lex Exp to get to my sister’s in Woodlawn instead of our usual A to the D at 145 St. At G/Cent, the M/M on the Lex Exp had his cab door open and for the first time I saw a Lo-V controller and I thought to myself “that doesn’t look like any IRT controller I ever saw.” As I got older, I got to learn the differences between the various similar looking IRT cars. At some point, I might have even ridden a Composite on the Polo Grounds Shuttle but since I was only 5 at the time they were removed, I probably thought they were just another normal IRT car. |
