Auto Train Question and Acela/NEC Questions

Posted by Nilet on Sun Jun 23 20:42:30 2019

So I may finally have a potential trip on offer (and not on the Palmetto).

So quick question regarding the Auto Train: If you're booked in a sleeper, is it possible to access the coach section? Strict segregation is impossible on every other train since the lounge and dining cars are shared, but the Auto Train has separate lounge/diner cars for coach and sleeper, so they could easily keep them separate. When I last rode the Auto Train, they had one of those diner-to-lounge conversion cars on it and if there's one running on mine I'd love to actually get pics of it— but it seems to be luck of the draw when they show up, and having access to the entire train boosts my odds of getting to ride in one however briefly.

If I do take this trip, my car-having companion will not be driving me all the way back to New York, so I'll have to take more trains from Washington DC. I was planning on taking the Acela in first class, since I've never done that before. Is there anybody who has taken Acela in first class and has opinions on whether it's worth it? Whether another option might be preferable to the Acela entirely?

Also, just as a practical question, Acela first class claims to offer at-seat meal service but does this apply to a train that doesn't really cover any mealtimes? Is there any way of knowing the specific menu in advance? (Amtrak's website lists three rotating menus but offers no way to know which will be used on any given day.)

tl;dr version:

1. Can sleeper passengers on the Auto Train access the coach section?

2. Is Acela first class worth it when travelling from WAS to NYP?

3. Is there any way to determine the (first class) lunch/dinner menu for a specific Acela train in advance, or whether lunch/dinner will be served at all on a train that doesn't entirely map to the right time of day for it?

My tuppence. I wouldn't bother with Acela at all. Admittedly I only tried it once in "business" which is their "coach" The coffee was terrible, the pastry was frozen Sara Lee nuked to soggy. Carry out from Au Bon Pain would be much better. Depending on your timing and where your buddy is letting you off, either the Meteor, or the Crescent would give you adequate food NB.

Enjoy the trip, whatever your final itinerary.

Hm, my experience with the cafe car on Acela tends to hover around a "not worth it" but apparently they have something vaguely swankier in first class.

If first class is otherwise worth it, I'd book a train that serves dinner just to get that included too.

Here's hoping the trip goes far better than the process of booking it. Amtrak's reservation people have a bit of trouble with the idea of two people who are travelling together but not "together" on the Auto Train with one car but essentially two separate reservations with separate payments. I had to arrange three (3) conference calls to get everything sorted.

AX First Class from WAS to NYP is really only worth it if your company is paying, you have a class upgrade coupon or you really have points to burn.

I can't help with Acela class questions because I find even commuter rail seating to be super luxurious :-)

But an unrelated opinion: I've done WAS to NYP many times both Acela and on non-Acela. IMHO Acela (no matter what the class) is not worth it. It's 3 hours vs 3.5 hours.

Anecdotally - Acela schedule adherence seemed better than average. I only rode it a few times so cannot provide a broad statistical base.

Never did Auto Train, but I don't regret my decision the one time in 2015 I took Acela 1st Class from WAS to NYP on an evening run (thus an appropriate time to be served dinner). Not sure if/when I'd do it again though.

You don't do it for speed, that's for sure. I think it's only worth it if:
1) (Most important) You very much appreciate, more than most people, having your food brought to you, being checked up on every few minutes by staff, and eating comfortably with silverware, etc.
2) (Second most) You plan to have a few drinks
3) (Least important) You arrive a little early and want a quieter place to wait for the train (the lounge).

I like to read a lot, so I enjoyed the quiet(er) lounge access and the service, and did have a couple of drinks.

I don't remember anything special about the decor of the car -- pretty bland and typical carbody -- and actually I recall the windows being quite dirty (which disappointed me as I had just watched a video about how carefully they clean and maintain the cars for Acela given the money coming out of the customers' pockets).

The bathroom for 1st class was huge -- I have to say that!

One thing to note is that the attendants in 1st Class seemed to be expecting tips upon arrival into NYP - not sure if that's normal or still the case. So plan on another few bucks there.

To add, I don't think I would ever do business class on Acela because while I haven't done it yet, I currently fail to see much difference between that and regular train travel. The time savings with Acela is way too minimal. If you rule out 1st class, then I'd just go on a regular train, unless you find some extraordinary ticket pricing or deal going on.

Hope this helps.

you really have points to burn

I'd say that the solo seat, dinner at your seat service, and low grade Courvoisier were worth the 12000 points that I paid for a 8 PM late evening departure nearly three years ago. Mind you, that was a very emotional trip for me given the circumstances at the time.

2. Is Acela first class worth it when travelling from WAS to NYP?

As I noted to JM, I rode in First, but was a special case scenario for me, and I've yet to replicate that experience for the section north to Boston. If you have money to burn and enjoy skipping the peasant stops, Business should be sufficient, but First makes it a bit more special. Mind you, I booked on points and not with actual cash, so my situation is different.

Why Do I Need A Paper Ticket? (Re: Auto Train Question and Acela/NEC Questions)

Posted by Nilet on Mon Jun 24 21:14:44 2019, in response to Auto Train Question and Acela/NEC Questions, posted by Nilet on Sun Jun 23 20:42:30 2019.

After finally solving (hopefully) the last problem with my reservation, I was told, essentially, that I needed a traditional paper ticket for the Auto Train and couldn't use an e-ticket (despite them having sent an e-ticket for the incorrect reservation prior to it being fixed).

Why do I need a paper ticket? Can I use the (old) e-ticket, since the only part of it that the conductor checks is the barcode, which just contains my reservation number, which hasn't changed? Why does my ticket not list train number or room number? And what does "fare plan: GOAT" mean?

The question of how to travel between NYC and WA, whether Acela 1st class, Acela Business, Regional, Megabus, or hitchhiking for that matter, depends entirely on the financial standing of the person or entity paying for the ticket.

Correct, on #79 & #80, we have our choice of water, orange juice, cranberry juice and hot coffee, regular or decaf, or hot chocolate. The car attendant frequency collects your trash and keeps you advised of delays, etc. You may also have pillows if you request them. There is much more leg room than coach, and there are foot rests ,it's a pleasure. Another bonus is you are right next to the cafe' car.

I'm not uncomfortable in the refreshed AM-1 coaches for a trip from NYP to WAS or NYP to SYR, which are my most common trips. What a BC or AM-2 has that is often overlooked -curtains, certain times during the day they are really handy.

oh certainly. My early experiences of this were ginger ale at age 11 on the B(est) & O(nly). In the early 50s the all coach Columbian between DC and Chicago had a round end obs bar lounge and a dome coach as well as an excellent diner.
I am looking at a trip from Chicago in Sept which is scheduled into LA at 5:35 AM. In a more rider oriented era sleeping car pax would be allowed to remainon board until a more civil hour--not Amtrak today.

Alas, I'm nowhere near old enough to have ridden them— in the early 1950s, my parents hadn't been born yet, let alone me. But round end dome cars still run on the Canadian and I'm sure they manage to get up to 79 at some point. Of course, if you want to ride them today you'll need to shell out $8,000 or ride during off-peak season (or accept "scheduled access" to them during the appointed hours only). I can't speak to the diner— it was excellent in 2008, but had degraded to decent by 2012.

If you're talking about the Texas Eagle/Sunset Limited, then apparently a more rider oriented era was 2014, when sleeper passengers arriving in Los Angeles at 5:35 were "welcome to occupy their accommodations until 6:30 a.m." though that notation seems to have been scrubbed from the schedule by early 2015.

OK, so here's a quick followup in case anybody with similar questions comes across this thread.

1. On my Auto Train, there was absolutely no segregation between coach and sleeper sections. In particular, they had decided not to staff the lounge car in the coach section and so coach passengers were expressly invited into the sleeper section's lounge car, through several sleepers. However, this seems to be based on the ridership for any given train; being the off-season for Florida, there were relatively few passengers, and so no need for two staffed lounge cars but things may be different in, say, December.

Also, both lounge cars were diner conversions; there were no sightseer lounge cars present. The coach lounge was being used as a diner-extension with the booth seating end facing the adjacent diner and set up with place settings. Both lounge and diner cars had red seat covers instead of the traditional blue.

2. I ultimately decided not to book Acela first class so I can't comment on whether it was worth it.

3. It turns out that you can get the Acela first class menu for any given (imminent) trip simply by calling Amtrak. That they weren't serving anything I eat was the final straw that convinced me not to book it (after reading several comments about it here and elsewhere). Incidentally, I inquired about ordering a kosher or vegan meal given my dislike for the standard menu; unfortunately, the guy on the phone couldn't tell me exactly what the kosher meal was, and the vegan meal had to be booked a week in advance and I hadn't given myself enough leeway.

Incidentally, not booking first class worked in my favour, as I arrived at Union Station earlier than I expected to and was able to seamlessly rebook for an earlier train set to depart within the next ten minutes.

Why I Needed A Paper Ticket (Re: Auto Train Question and Acela/NEC Questions)

Posted by Nilet on Tue Jul 9 18:27:21 2019, in response to Why Do I Need A Paper Ticket? (Re: Auto Train Question and Acela/NEC Questions), posted by Nilet on Mon Jun 24 21:14:44 2019.

Apparently, the reason I needed a paper ticket was due to an accident of Amtrak's reservation system and the way they put two people on separate reservations in the same roomette. Since the roomette wasn't on "my" reservation (despite me paying for it), the system wouldn't accept that I was travelling in it. Accordingly, they were forced to enter my ticket as a "manual fare adjustment" which in turn required a paper ticket. It didn't list my room number because it was a manual entry that the system didn't officially recognise as being attached to that room (not that this stopped me from getting checked in; I just needed to show them my ticket at the gate as we drove up).

Also, the "fare plan" appears to be a quasi-random string of four alphanumeric characters of no obvious meaning— except that the stub of an old Shore Line East ticket printed by Amtrak's printers onto Amtrak's ticket stock lists "fare plan: SLOW" which sounds like it might be a dig at something.

I walked right up to the ticket counter - which had no line - and the ticket agent changed the booking and handed me a new ticket within 45 seconds.

Strictly speaking, there was a (short) line, but the ticket counter had a dedicated "Acela only" window for which there was no line.
