Re: Auto Train Question and Acela/NEC Questions

Posted by New Flyer #857 on Mon Jun 24 08:53:30 2019, in response to Auto Train Question and Acela/NEC Questions, posted by Nilet on Sun Jun 23 20:42:30 2019.

Never did Auto Train, but I don't regret my decision the one time in 2015 I took Acela 1st Class from WAS to NYP on an evening run (thus an appropriate time to be served dinner). Not sure if/when I'd do it again though.

You don't do it for speed, that's for sure. I think it's only worth it if:
1) (Most important) You very much appreciate, more than most people, having your food brought to you, being checked up on every few minutes by staff, and eating comfortably with silverware, etc.
2) (Second most) You plan to have a few drinks
3) (Least important) You arrive a little early and want a quieter place to wait for the train (the lounge).

I like to read a lot, so I enjoyed the quiet(er) lounge access and the service, and did have a couple of drinks.

I don't remember anything special about the decor of the car -- pretty bland and typical carbody -- and actually I recall the windows being quite dirty (which disappointed me as I had just watched a video about how carefully they clean and maintain the cars for Acela given the money coming out of the customers' pockets).

The bathroom for 1st class was huge -- I have to say that!

One thing to note is that the attendants in 1st Class seemed to be expecting tips upon arrival into NYP - not sure if that's normal or still the case. So plan on another few bucks there.

To add, I don't think I would ever do business class on Acela because while I haven't done it yet, I currently fail to see much difference between that and regular train travel. The time savings with Acela is way too minimal. If you rule out 1st class, then I'd just go on a regular train, unless you find some extraordinary ticket pricing or deal going on.

Hope this helps.
