Tuscarora Dispatch No 25 / R-32 and R-38 Rollsigns |

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Tue May 14 09:12:04 2019 Tuscarora Dispatch No. 25Rollsign Readings for the R-32 A, R-32 and R-38 Car Classes These are the rollsigns reading for the R-32 A (3350-3649), R-32 (3650-3949) and R-38 (3950-4149) car classes as they were delivered. A reading for the “”DD” returned to subway cars for the first time since the R-9 order of 1940. This may have been due to the fact that the “DD” was activated for a brief time in December 1962. Also for the first time since 1940 the “HH” reappears. This time the reading is not “Fulton Street Local” but Rockaway Local. The Rockaway Shuttles were designated “HH” on February 1, 1962. The reading for the BMT Southern Division route eliminated the BMT route names, i.e. Brighton, Sea Beach etc. This caused so much confusion that the TA had to post large metal signs informing passengers which line was which. Note that no provision was made for the new routes even though Chrystie Street was on the horizon. This information comes from the February 1968 issue of the ERA New York Division Bulletin. Credit is due to the members who took the time to scroll through all these rollsigns. Larry, RedbirdR33 |

Interesting that they had Rockaway Pkwy as a north terminal and 8th Av as a south terminal. Wonder what that was about. Didn't really matter, AFAIK, the R-32s and R-38s never operated on the LL/L, at least not in regular service. |

They were digging the fucking tunnels in the late 1950's.In 1966, the plan was to kill the RR, send the "15" as the J or RJ, and I believe (not 100% sure) kill the AA/CC and send the KK/MM up there. So what happens: they stick cardboard "RR" and "95th Street" on R16's route and south signs. Then we get not only RJ, but QJ to replace QT, EE, and NX in addition, and couldn't make up their minds about B vs. BB, even though the former had no route signage either. |

After Christie, an R32 could pop up on a QJ. When the R16's returned and were falling apart in 1976, the R32's got on the LL.Rocakaway Pkwy as a north terminal makes perfect sense. A train could run there from the Nassau Street line as the south terminal. |

I did operate an R32 on the Canarsie Line. This was when CI maintenance barn was being rebuilt and the CI inspections were dispersed throughout the B Division. ENY was doing the inspections on the R32's so they did pop up on the Canarsie Line. I would imagine on the J line too, but I don't remember. This would be in the early '80's. |

That makes sense, as it was a north and south terminal. (I know the R-32s on the AA used "Chambers St" instead of "Hudson Terminal"). Strangely, the later R-40s did use Hudson Terminal. It became academic in the 80s as the revised roll signs used "World Trade Center". |

If my grandfather had lived (died in 1965), wonder if he would have worked the QJ. He actually started in the SOuthern Division, then later transferred to the Eastern (his last assignment was the 15). Might have been like coming home for him (he enjoyed eating at Natahan's also). OTOH, QJ was a looooonnng-ass run, and he would have been close to 60 by then, maybe he would have wanted something shorter. |

Rockaway Pkwy as a north terminal makes perfect sense. A train could run there from the Nassau Street line as the south terminal. That makes sense. But 8th Av as a south terminal makes no sense. Sometimes Hudson Terminal was displayed on the R-32s. Whether H/T or Chambers was displayed, depended on how far the plat C/Rs at 168 St felt like turning the roll sign on a B returning from Coney Is when going into AA service. |

Which brings to mind Why none of the 38s were used in regular service along any Eastern division routes. Its the same with the R40s or M. The 40/40a/40m didn't see regular service until the GOH cars replaced the 16/30s. The 42s and modified 40s All operated along J/Z/M routes...but the L received R40s/42s,which basically stayed there until the 143s forced out ALL the R40 cars regardless of subset,to the southern division lines. The 38s bounced all over the place, but Never the East unless there was a situation where a set or two was needed to cover service on the M. After GOH...the 38s became strictly IND cars again..ruling the A line until some trickled over to the C...kicking the 27/30s out, sharing the 40s and 32s. Car assignments are strange. Somethings are a constant, like knowing the 75ft cars will NEVER run IN SERVICE over Any Eastern division route...along with the 5 car sets of NTT cars. Basically the east has been placed in its own subdivision with ridiculous service constrains that should have been corrected years ago..not further complicated. In any case...thats my take. The 32 and 42 keep chugging along at 55 and 50 Years in service...waiting for replacements. |

So, if one were intelligent, car assignments should relate to maintenance bases. Smaller quantities of specific spare parts at a single barn, workers more experienced w/ the quirks of the cars. |

I operated R38's on the M while I was a conductor in 1980, both 4 and 8 car trains. After I made motorman, I operated 8 car R38's before GOH on the on the Brighton M. They also occasionally ran on the QB. Both events happened very rarely, but they did happen. Keep in mind any car from CIYD could operate on any line because it was so difficult to make service. And speaking of odd assignments, once the M moved to the West End, I did operate a train of GOH'ed slants a few times. |

NYT, November '67 reported daily chaos after Chrystie. At NY Div. meetings I remember hearing stories about unusual equipment showing up where it was not expected to operate, destination signs not matching a train's actual route, and of course the cardbord signs with terminals or destinations written in magic marker. I took a photo at Marcy Ave. June or July '68, of the front of an inbound R9, with "JJ" printed on a white background, and the route name/terminal box next to it, completely blank. |

I saw a NB B at DeKalb w/ the headsign trying to show 168 but hide Jamaica.Local papers in Bay Ridge rumored hope that the reroutes would be abandoned. In retrospect, the TA needed more midtown throughput but failed to educate/persuade riders how close 6th Ave is to B'way. As to the KK--the Williamsburg to the jewelry district market was shrinking as people moved. |

When Chrystie first opened, the R-9s assigned to the Eastern had already been equipped with KK/6 Ave (actually Ave of Americas) Lcl signs. Since the intiail JJ service was only temporary, the TA used the white stck on signs until 57/6 opened when the JJ was replaced by the KK. Actually there was a bit of a mishmash of service since when the Jamaica Line did not go to the Brighton Line, the service was also called JJ. After 57/6 opened and the KK 6 Av service established, all the Jamaica Line service was called QJ even when it didn’t operate over the Brighton which was nights and weekends. In preparation for the soon to be delivered R-40s which lack an end destination sign, the TA opted to have the new signs on the R-9s display only the letter and the end destination signs set blank. The original IND signs were still left on the roller and whenever I worked the 4 St Line I would set the end destination sign on the Canarsie end of my trains to read “Rockaway Park” which was ac close to “Rockaway Parkway” as I could get. On the R-32s, 38s and a few R-27/30s, the TA took a different approach placing the new route signs in the former destination sign box and setting the former route signs blank or in some cases actually painting the sign glass black. The TR-16s eventually got the same sign tratment as the R-32s but with the addition of the proper side signs. |

In 1976 or '77 (age 8 or 9), I saw an R32 signed up as a BB (side roll sign). I didn't understand how that could be, as the maps showed no such route. Most of the R-32s had a "B" superimposed over the "BB". It involved a white patch with a "B" in black. Looked crappy to be blunt. Probably the car you saw hadn't had the patch done (or a replacemtn destination roll was installed which didn't have it. I did see one car with a new roll with lowercase letter "B via 6 Avenue" (this was probably because the B was express on 6th Av in the rush hour (when it went to 168th St) and local all other times (when going to 57/6).In the opening of "Welcome Back Kotter", you see a train of R-32s southbound on the B passing "James Buchanan HS", which in real life was New Utrecht HS (IIRC). If you look closely at the below video, at about 0:13, you can see the route sign with that B patch. |

I wish I could make out the numbers on those cars (the first one appears to be 35XX). I wouldn't be surprised if at least 2 of them (or 1, given that some cars got mismatched) are still active, 44 years after that was filmed! (And they were 10-11 years old at the time)R-32s, a national treasure :) |

When the R-32s were relatively new, graffiti free, and washed regularly, they looked pretty good and actually operated better pre GOH then they do now. |

They definitely looked better with the original blue doors and end roll signs and marker lights than today with just the flip dot on the end. They accelerated much better than the R27/30 due to less weight and also did not have A/C before GOH. I remember them pre-Chrystie running on the N,Q, and T express runs and they looked good. |

Blue doors, real headsigns,, YES!!! The single best order of subway cars produced in the US IMHO. They and the recently GOHed PATCO cars willperoably make 60 before fully replaced. |
