Thanks for the update -- I haven't taken a look at the East LA Gold Line progress since last spring. It seems to be coming along very nicely. I can't wait to see what the underground stations look like.

On a related note 2 sets of Breda cars were out on the completed portion of the Gold Line today: 712-717 and 708-715.

Great pics, reminds me of when I followed the construction progress of the Blue Line in early 1990 (though by that time, most of the mainline had been completed, wires energized and they were running 1-car test trains). I did get to see most of the Washington Blvd and Flower St construction, however.

On the first pic, I think you are correct about the crew room. I suspect that Gold Line T/Os will "fall back" at Atlantic, as I suspect they probably do now at Union Station, and since Atlantic will be the new south terminal (I have to guess on this, since I have never been on the Gold Line)

LACMTA finally expressing displeasure with the new Breda LRV's

From the LA Times.

Breda has proposed moving operations to LA to entice Metro who apparently does not plan on exercising two 50-car options for the base 50 car order. The current order is years behind schedule and as they mention in the article the seats are too small. What they don't mention is that the AC is much too loud and the train operators find the cars extremely confusing to operate. In over 3 years of testing we've had only 8 cars accepted and enter service.

I've only ridden them a few times and have seen cars stall, roll backwards (twice), leak water from the AC, and have incorrect destination signs/automated announcements. Others have seen even worse. Hopefully they get these problems fixed, although I also hope that we get another company for the next 118 cars. Maybe Siemens.

Light rail firm says it wants to move to L.A. -- if MTA renews a contract
6:14 PM, February 10, 2009

A dispute involving millions of taxpayer dollars and potentially thousands of so-called green jobs has erupted between the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and a manufacturer of light rail cars, according to interviews and documents.

A firm called AnsaldoBreda says it will relocate its assembly and manufacturing plants from Pittsburg, Calif., and Italy to Los Angeles if -- and it's a big if -- the MTA agrees to buy 100 rail cars from the firm for more than $300 million. The MTA doesn't want to commit to the purchase and agency officials say they want to consider having other companies build new rail vehicles.

In 2003, the MTA signed a contract to buy 50 rail cars from AnsaldoBreda with two options to build a total of 100 more cars. Thirteen of those cars are being used on the Gold Line and six are being tested by the MTA before being put into operations.

The gray cars are recognizable for their streamlined, Art Deco-ish look. They're also known to passengers for a more dubious reason: The seats are two inches narrower than in other types of light rail cars used by the MTA, meaning riders are more squished together.

In the meantime, there has been a lot of finger-pointing between the MTA and AnsaldoBreda over issues involving the manufacturing of the cars.

MTA staff, in a Jan. 28 memo, wrote that the AnsaldoBreda cars are about 6,000 pounds overweight, use too much electricity and can't be used on the MTA's other light rail lines because they aren't interchangeable with other types of rail cars. MTA officials also say that all 50 of the cars were due by May 2007.

Mike Cannell, the agency's general manager for rail operations, said that there have been other problems, including train doors that were opening too soon and brake pads that were falling off cars. As for the narrow seats and interchangeability issues, Cannell said that it isn't clear if someone at the MTA changed the requirements for the cars since the original order was placed.

Cannell said that the passage of a half-cent sales tax increase last year to build more mass transit means that more new rail cars are needed. Instead of buying 100 of the cars from AnsaldoBreda, the MTA would rather contract to purchase 118 new rail cars and have the same company rebuild 69 existing Blue Line cars.

"I'm not canceling their contract," Cannell said. "It's simply a question of why do we want more of them -- if the passengers don't like them?"

Four years ago, the relationship between the MTA and AnsaldoBreda seemed better. In a 2005 news release about the delivery of new rail cars, MTA Chief Executive Roger Snoble praised AnsaldoBreda. "The 2550 [rail car] is as technologically advanced as any light rail car operating in the United States," the release quoted Snoble as saying. "AnsaldoBreda has answered our call for a first-class vehicle that meets the needs of all three Metro Rail light rail lines, to be delivered on time and within budget."

AnsaldoBreda officials could not be reached for comment. But a letter Friday from the company's CEO to the MTA Board of Directors outlines their side of the story. The firm says that the MTA has repeatedly praised its performance and that delays in producing the new cars was the result of the MTA changing specifications for the vehicles after some of the cars were delivered.

"AnsaldoBreda specifically began exploring the idea of locating the company's American manufacturing facility and corporate headquarters to Los Angeles in the fourth quarter of 2008 after the economic meltdown and the overwhelming passage of Measure R," wrote AnsaldoBreda President Giancarlo Fantappie in the letter to the MTA board. "The manufacturing facility and headquarters will generate approximately 5,000 jobs and millions of dollars in revenue for Los Angeles."

The company also argues that picking up the option to build the 100 rail cars could qualify the MTA to receive money from the economic stimulus plan proposed by President Barack Obama.

What remains unclear is whether AnsaldoBreda is actually going to move to Los Angeles or use the prospect of a move as a negotiating maneuver. The firm, in its letter, said that it began to consider the move in the "fourth quarter of 2008" -- in other words, just weeks before the MTA decided whether to exercise its options to buy 100 more of the AnsaldoBreda cars.

"We've met with them and they were very impressive," Cecilia Estolano, chief executive of the Community Redevelopment Agency in Los Angeles, said of AnsaldoBreda. "They seem to be strongly committed to coming to Los Angeles if they can make progress with [the MTA]. The job numbers they presented to us and the wage scale they presented to us were very attractive."

Estolano said the company is interested in building a plant on a 20-acre plot of industrial land that the redevelopment agency purchased from the state last year. The agency has dubbed the area as the "CleanTech Manufacturing Center" and is hoping to use incentives to attract environmentally-friendly companies.

Estolano added that the agency is evaluating AnsaldoBreda along with other firms interested in potentially using the site.

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa has been involved in talking to AnsaldoBreda. "The mayor has been aggressively pursuing the opportunity to bring new green manufacturing jobs to Los Angeles," said Matt Szabo, a Villaraigosa spokesman. "Hundreds of new jobs would provide exactly the kind of boost the local economy needs."

"With respect to the contract, the mayor is committed to ensuring that AnsaldoBreda receives a full and thorough review on its merits in front of the MTA Board of Directors before making a decision on the contract," Szabo added.

The entire matter will ultimately land in the lap of the MTA board -- which is chaired by Villaraigosa -- at its monthly meeting in March. That gives officials with AnsaldoBreda and other companies who hope to win a rail car contract plenty of time to make their case: AnsaldoBreda will lobby to have the options picked up and other firms will want the chance to bid on a different, larger contract.

Given the size of that contract -- it will total in the hundreds of millions of dollars -- rest assured there will be plenty of lobbying on all fronts.

From Metrolink's website.

ANTELOPE VALLEY LINE DELAYS

On the evening of February 10, 2009, Antelope Valley Line train 215 (the 5:00 pm departure from Los Angeles) was disabled by a mechanical issue between Sylmar/San Fernando and Newhall stations. Train 217, the 5:40 pm departure from Los Angeles was coupled to train 215 and pushed it to Newhall station. Train 215 was terminated at Newhall station and its passengers were transferred to train 217. Trains 217 and 220 were both delayed 90 minutes by the mechanical breakdown due to train 215 becoming disabled on a single track section of the line. Passengers on trains 215, 217 and 220 on this evening qualify for compensation under Metrolink's Quality Service Pledge. Click on "Quality Pledge" on the right side of this page for more information.

8:00 AM

This morning (February 11), Antelope Valley Line train 202 (the 5:10 am departure from Lancaster) encountered mechanical difficulties and was unable to depart Lancaster on time and then became disabled between the Vincent Grade/Acton and Via Princessa stations. Train 204 was coupled to train 202 at that location and is currently towing the train and its passengers to all stops. The trains are now 1 hour and 50 behind schedule into the Via Princessa station. Trains 206 and 208 are also delayed following behind the two coupled trains. Passengers on trains 202 and 204 this morning qualify for compensation under Metrolink's Quality Service Pledge. Click on "Quality Pledge" on the right side of this page for information.

Train delay summary for yesterday:

#215 - 97 min delay
#217 - 82 min delay
#219 - 45 min delay
#220 - 125 min delay
#221 - 52 min delay
#222 - 27 min delay

Now those same people trying to get to work this morning were all delayed about 2 hours more or less. Between this type of service, all of the accidents, and LIRR-like ticket prices, it's a wonder that anyone rides Metrolink. :(

I wonder did they just hook up the consists front to back (i.e. the cab car from train 217 coupled to the engine of train 215), or did they put the engines together and the coaches together (such a move would've required the necessary switches to be nearby, so I suspect it was the former). Musta made for quite an interesting consist, with an engine placed mid-train. Of course this meant that the cars from the different trains were isolated from each other.

And what's this about compensation for delayed riders? We'll see that on the LIRR when pigs fly.

Yeah but the compensation is free tickets and monthly pass holders (90% of pax) are already allowed unlimited rides per month.

Monthly Pass Holder
Upon request, with proof of pass ownership, a monthly pass holder is eligible to receive a 4-trip ticket with a one-year expiration date from the date of the incident.

One-way, Round-trip or 10-trip Ticket Holder
One way, round-trip or 10-trip ticket holder receives a replacement ticket no less than the value of the trip that was extensively delayed. Ticket holder must submit the original ticket(s) to be eligible for replacement ticket.

For almost two years!! They are just bizarre. They debated turnstile installation for two years, decided to install them, paid several contractors, entered contractual agreements, and then after starting installation they decided to stop. wtf? LACMTA is great in some ways and completely clueless and incompetent in other ways.

Here's a pic that I took last week of the installation at Normandie on the purple line.

No more "crashing arrows" on the side of Metrolink cars. Some of the older cars have already been updated with this new design.

The new cars are Korean. No more Bombardier which really haven't done too well in Metrolink crashes. Especially the Chatsworth crash where it was basically disintegrated when it's loco was pushed into it.

Any car could have had that happen, whether it was a regular Superliner, an Amfleet, a Shoreliner, or a Multilevel (NJT). Locomotives are heavier and more solid built than most passengers cars, so in the same crash, any car model or class would have disintegrated the same way, especially at the same speed, be it a Bombardier, a Sumitomo, a Kawasaki, a Budd or a Pullman Standard.

I like the new logo and color scheme (as much as you can see under the wrappings, I'll be able to better judge once I see an unwrapped one). Never was much of a fan of the purple colors.

One method of testing the new cars is to run a cab-forward train, equip the engineer with a text-enabled phone, and instruct him to text to his heart's content and pay no attention to wayside signals.

Expo investment (Re: LACMTA news and LA area events)

Money is already being spent on TOD's adjacent and near Expo. Other than downtown Long Beach and downtown LA, more money will have been spent on TOD's for Expo before it opens than there has been for the entire 20 year history of the blue line (20th anniversary on July 14). In addition to what's mentioned in the article there's a hotel in Culver City and a Target/grocery store shopping center next to the Crenshaw station in LA.

Exposition is currently a sleepy little road, but it won't be in just a few years at this rate. This is really showing a pent up demand for train service to LA's westside job and population centers. So far lines are primarily in poorer areas of the city. The second phase of Expo will be the first line to go to what many consider to be the "real" LA - the Westside.

All time rail ridership record (Re: LACMTA news and LA area events)

With rail ridership down seemingly everywhere Los Angeles just set an all time record (I'm pretty sure...nothing on the LACMTA website). We did have a lightly used light rail line extension open in the last year and both the blue and red lines (our busiest) nearly had all time records. The green line was up there (top 6) as well. A big part of the blue line increase was that it had a rare month without any significant service disruptions due to construction/repairs/maintenance. Also the Lakers parade brought record crowds. Probably a single day record for the system especially the blue and red lines.

Resolution finally!

An additional station was allowed to be added at the very tiny Farmdale intersection. The final approval was just granted by the CPUC today.

It is broken. If you read the presentation they highlight my comment. Once I get past the basic colors it’s hit and miss. 14 colors will definitely be confusing although they add to the confusion by including buses unnecessarily.
