LA Metro sets all time ridership records on all lines

All rail lines and the Orange line BRT set all time records in July. I think that this is the first time in a while, maybe ever, that the gold line had more riders than the Orange line.

The monthly ridership was:

Red/Purple - 159,439
Blue - 86,596
Green - 46,527
Gold - 27,019
Orang (BRT) - 26,907

Wow, the Orange Line almost beat out the Gold. Kinda a bad showing for the Gold, where a bus line (albeit with 60-foot (and one 65-foot) artics, and running like a rail line) almost beats a true rail line with 2-car trains (each of which holds more pax than an artic bus (AFAIK)).

This is great news - I think the Gold Line will additionally see a significant jump when the Eastside Extension opens. Now if they could only get that downtown connector built...

The MTA has recommended continuing studies of both the Wilshire and WeHo subway routes. No doubt that they intend to build both if the transit sales tax increase passes in November.

True. Highland Park, Cypress, Frogtown,.. all those neighborhoods were much worse in the 90's when the gang problem was at it's worst. It's gotten better every year since about '95 and I think that the gold line has helped.

The next area to watch out for is Boyle Heights. It's a very walkable neighborhood and when the east la extension opens it will be very convenient to downtown which is also rapidly gentrifying. I'd be very surprised if Boyle Heights isn't considered a pretty decent neighborhood in less than 10 years.

Oh, and also watch out for the MacArthur Park neighborhood. Money is being poured into both Koreatown and downtown and people priced out of those areas will head to MacArthur Park.

You weren't here so you probably can't appreciate how much safer LA is than 10 years ago. Pretty much everywhere.

Gold line is the safest LA rail line, blue is last

I'm not at all surprised that the gold line is the safest. There are 2-3 times as many deputies on the gold line as there are on the blue line. I don't know why there are so many police given that it's by far the safest line and there are more problems in other places. I had heard that it was part of the MTA's desire to attract "choice" riders.

The red line is the second safest and also has a large police presence. The red line rape sounds like it may not really have happened. 7th/metro is a busy station. Hard to see how a rape could happen on an escalator with no one seeing it happen. The green is next while the blue line is last. They don't show a rate, but the blue line has 4 times as many riders as the gold, so it's not quite as bad as it looks. I really don't know if these stats are good or bad, but here they are:

I can vouch for that. Every time I get off the train at Union Station, there's a pair of deputies standing at the top of the stairs doing what appears to be nothing. They're not even checking tickets.

Yes because of the high class neighborhoods of South Pasadena, Pasadena, and Sierra Madre. They want to attract more of the riders that live up there first.

The Blue Line still needs improvement in terms of security. The line obviously goes through gang-infested neighborhoods in South LA, Watts, & Compton. I honestly avoid riding it after dark. I feel much safer riding the MTA 60 local 760 rapid than I do riding the Blue Line. Its a shame they had to cut the 60 during the daytime to Artesia Station.

Hmmm... I always feel safe riding the blue line at night and never even think about it. I would probably think differently if I had to get off and walk around Watts at night, but only once or twice have I felt unsafe on the train. And nothing happened either time.

It's busier at night than it used to be. I really don't give it a second thought.

Christmas Miracle: Angels Flight Track Work Begins*
Thursday, October 30, 2008, by Dakota

Image Gallery

Rail work began this week on Angels Flight, that Downtown funicular that previously connected Bunker Hill to the Historic Core. A 2001 Angels Flight fatal accident closed down the ride, and there's been much speculation about when the 107-year-old funicular would open again. According to foreman Ken Johnson (pictured, wearing orange), the original two cars will be delivered this weekend and tested out on the tracks next week. As far as the official opening? "It could be Thanksgiving, but it's looking more like Christmas," he said. Work that took place this week involved refastening the clampings and redoing the rail splicings, he said. Meanwhile, John Welborne, president of Angels Flight Railway, referenced the forthcoming work this spring, stating that he "expects the contractors to return the two historic railway cars, Olivet and Sinai, to the tracks soon." UPDATE: Here's an email update from Welborne: "Work has been going on all year - however not on the tracks, where work is visible . . . as you noted today. As you realize (because it's posted on Curbed LA, I think!), the new Drive machinery was installed late last year. Today, the engineers were testing a cable on this new Drive. Both the restoration and the restoration fundraising have been ongoing all year. We expect to complete both soon --but we don't have a specific date yet. I'll try to keep you posted of developments and reopening projections." *Headline updated to indicate it's the track work that's going on now.

2. You have a outstanding school loan you are desperately trying to evade paying to a Atlanta based Heavy Equipment school?
3. You were in fact homeless and thus your strong feelings about the subject?
4. Your not paying taxes on all your internet business ventures including a picture you took of Walmart used by a major media outlet?
5. What happenned at 149 St when the police arrested you for riding in the cab of a Redbird to get that great video shot?
6. What happenned on the LIRR? We want to know the details! We know your were escorted of the train by MTA police, but else happenned? Fines, inprisonment, a letter of apology to the engineer and conductor of that train?
7. Did you REALLY write a letter of apology to the train operator who got in trouble for letting you ride in his cab or was that a lie also?

DOWNTOWN LOS ANGELES - On Saturday, Nov. 1, the two cars that long ran on Angels Flight were returned to the track that connects Bunker Hill and the Historic Core. The cars, named Olivet and Sinai, were brought to Hill Street Saturday morning and were lifted by a 275-ton crane over the arch at the bottom of the funicular and placed on the track.

It is a significant step forward for the railway, which has been closed since a deadly accident in 2001. Last year, new drive machinery was installed, and late last week, a cable for the drive was being tested. No date has been set yet for when the railway could resume operations.

"While there still are many weeks of fine-tuning and testing yet to be undertaken, we are hopeful that Angels Flight will reopen to the public late this year or early in 2009," said Dennis Luna, chairman of the Angels Flight Railway Foundation.

John Welborne, president of the Foundation, has spent significant time in recent years raising money for a renovation of the railway and the new drive system.

Interesting. If I'm not doing anything tomorrow I may just take a trip downtown and see what it's like...

(And I'm not going to park my car at the much-talked-about Fillmore station parking structure -- I'm riding my bike to Highland Park.)

At least one of the Angels Flight cars is back on the tracks. I'm assuming the other one was as well, but I couldn't stop and look as I had to pay attention to driving.

The entrance on Hill Street is still blocked off, of course, but the lights were on when I passed by this evening.

Thanks. I was downtown today and thought about heading over there, but decided against it. I was headed to see a movie in Hollywood with my daughters so I was going the other way. Plus I knew that they'd be there for a while.

According to blogdowntown both cars - Sinai and Olivet - are back on the tracks.

I was downtown on Sunday, and saw both on the tracks - one was around 1/3 of the way up and the other was around 2/3.

if you dont mind paying a hefty $12.oo all day parking fee wit the
risk of your car being towed away you wont park at fillmore !!
park instead at del mar , much more reasonable rates for sure !!
thats where i am going to go

Cool! I think that the cars that we have now are still the original - Olivet and Sinai.

LA Metro construction update

The gold line East LA extension is coming along nicely. Much of the track work appears finished. A few exceptions like Alameda and the 1st street bridge. They're making progress on the stations as well.

The Atlantic Station has an under construction crew room at the end of the platform. At least I think that's what it is.

Anyone allergic to pics through dirty windows should apply aloe generously before proceeding.

Construction on Expo is finally making its way to Flower. Tracks are being laid on various sections. Seems to be on or maybe ahead of schedule.
