I can't wait to see what the underground stations look like.On a related note 2 sets of Breda cars were out on the completed portion of the Gold Line today: 712-717 and 708-715. |

Great pics, reminds me of when I followed the construction progress of the Blue Line in early 1990 (though by that time, most of the mainline had been completed, wires energized and they were running 1-car test trains). I did get to see most of the Washington Blvd and Flower St construction, however. On the first pic, I think you are correct about the crew room. I suspect that Gold Line T/Os will "fall back" at Atlantic, as I suspect they probably do now at Union Station, and since Atlantic will be the new south terminal (I have to guess on this, since I have never been on the Gold Line) |

LACMTA finally expressing displeasure with the new Breda LRV's |
|
Posted by Easy on Wed Feb 11 22:07:31 2009, in response to LACMTA news and LA area events, posted by Easy on Sun Apr 27 14:21:47 2008. From the LA Times.Breda has proposed moving operations to LA to entice Metro who apparently does not plan on exercising two 50-car options for the base 50 car order. The current order is years behind schedule and as they mention in the article the seats are too small. What they don't mention is that the AC is much too loud and the train operators find the cars extremely confusing to operate. In over 3 years of testing we've had only 8 cars accepted and enter service. I've only ridden them a few times and have seen cars stall, roll backwards (twice), leak water from the AC, and have incorrect destination signs/automated announcements. Others have seen even worse. Hopefully they get these problems fixed, although I also hope that we get another company for the next 118 cars. Maybe Siemens.

And Peter complains about the LIRR... |
|
Posted by Easy on Wed Feb 11 22:14:40 2009, in response to LACMTA news and LA area events, posted by Easy on Sun Apr 27 14:21:47 2008. From Metrolink's website.ANTELOPE VALLEY LINE DELAYS On the evening of February 10, 2009, Antelope Valley Line train 215 (the 5:00 pm departure from Los Angeles) was disabled by a mechanical issue between Sylmar/San Fernando and Newhall stations. Train 217, the 5:40 pm departure from Los Angeles was coupled to train 215 and pushed it to Newhall station. Train 215 was terminated at Newhall station and its passengers were transferred to train 217. Trains 217 and 220 were both delayed 90 minutes by the mechanical breakdown due to train 215 becoming disabled on a single track section of the line. Passengers on trains 215, 217 and 220 on this evening qualify for compensation under Metrolink's Quality Service Pledge. Click on "Quality Pledge" on the right side of this page for more information. 8:00 AM This morning (February 11), Antelope Valley Line train 202 (the 5:10 am departure from Lancaster) encountered mechanical difficulties and was unable to depart Lancaster on time and then became disabled between the Vincent Grade/Acton and Via Princessa stations. Train 204 was coupled to train 202 at that location and is currently towing the train and its passengers to all stops. The trains are now 1 hour and 50 behind schedule into the Via Princessa station. Trains 206 and 208 are also delayed following behind the two coupled trains. Passengers on trains 202 and 204 this morning qualify for compensation under Metrolink's Quality Service Pledge. Click on "Quality Pledge" on the right side of this page for information. Train delay summary for yesterday: #215 - 97 min delay #217 - 82 min delay #219 - 45 min delay #220 - 125 min delay #221 - 52 min delay #222 - 27 min delay Now those same people trying to get to work this morning were all delayed about 2 hours more or less. Between this type of service, all of the accidents, and LIRR-like ticket prices, it's a wonder that anyone rides Metrolink. :( |

I wonder did they just hook up the consists front to back (i.e. the cab car from train 217 coupled to the engine of train 215), or did they put the engines together and the coaches together (such a move would've required the necessary switches to be nearby, so I suspect it was the former). Musta made for quite an interesting consist, with an engine placed mid-train. Of course this meant that the cars from the different trains were isolated from each other. |

Yeah but the compensation is free tickets and monthly pass holders (90% of pax) are already allowed unlimited rides per month.Monthly Pass Holder Upon request, with proof of pass ownership, a monthly pass holder is eligible to receive a 4-trip ticket with a one-year expiration date from the date of the incident. One-way, Round-trip or 10-trip Ticket Holder One way, round-trip or 10-trip ticket holder receives a replacement ticket no less than the value of the trip that was extensively delayed. Ticket holder must submit the original ticket(s) to be eligible for replacement ticket. |

They debated turnstile installation for two years, decided to install them, paid several contractors, entered contractual agreements, and then after starting installation they decided to stop. wtf? LACMTA is great in some ways and completely clueless and incompetent in other ways. Here's a pic that I took last week of the installation at Normandie on the purple line. |

Some of the older cars have already been updated with this new design. The new cars are Korean. No more Bombardier which really haven't done too well in Metrolink crashes. Especially the Chatsworth crash where it was basically disintegrated when it's loco was pushed into it. LAist |

Locomotives are heavier and more solid built than most passengers cars, so in the same crash, any car model or class would have disintegrated the same way, especially at the same speed, be it a Bombardier, a Sumitomo, a Kawasaki, a Budd or a Pullman Standard. |

|
Posted by Easy on Wed Jul 7 22:45:00 2010, in response to LACMTA news and LA area events, posted by Easy on Sun Apr 27 14:21:47 2008. Money is already being spent on TOD's adjacent and near Expo. Other than downtown Long Beach and downtown LA, more money will have been spent on TOD's for Expo before it opens than there has been for the entire 20 year history of the blue line (20th anniversary on July 14). In addition to what's mentioned in the article there's a hotel in Culver City and a Target/grocery store shopping center next to the Crenshaw station in LA.Exposition is currently a sleepy little road, but it won't be in just a few years at this rate. This is really showing a pent up demand for train service to LA's westside job and population centers. So far lines are primarily in poorer areas of the city. The second phase of Expo will be the first line to go to what many consider to be the "real" LA - the Westside. NY Times |

With rail ridership down seemingly everywhere Los Angeles just set an all time record (I'm pretty sure...nothing on the LACMTA website). We did have a lightly used light rail line extension open in the last year and both the blue and red lines (our busiest) nearly had all time records. The green line was up there (top 6) as well. A big part of the blue line increase was that it had a rare month without any significant service disruptions due to construction/repairs/maintenance. Also the Lakers parade brought record crowds. Probably a single day record for the system especially the blue and red lines. The Source |
