In Australia, My First Niagara worked with my standard ATM pin, my Credit Union one did not (thanks for reminding me, I did try both those). In Japan at the ticket machine, absolutely nothing worked except the First Niagara chip and pin credit card (and I could only buy tickets with it, not add funds to SUICA, but I suspect that restriction is for all credit cards).

The frustrating thing about Sydney is I found no vending machines that would take cash for refills, and the only ticket window I found was at the Airport station. Turns out if you need to refill with cash, go to a convenience store, but only some could do it (I think 7-Eleven, it's been a while). I basically put $150AUD on it so I wouldn't have to deal with being out of funds.

They were entirely eaten. I got a free safe deposit box but ATM fee reimbursals are only up to $6/month instead of unlimited. The online banking is better at least. Everything else is more or less the same. Oh and the foreign transaction fee applies to Canada which was not the case under First Niagara, however the fee went from being a flat $5 to something which comes out to less than $5 for ~$150 USD equivalent (my typical ATM transaction) so it was kindof an improvement here.

If your credit card has no PIN, it will not work at a TVM.

FWIW, I've found that most European TVMs want nothing to do with my chip and pin Chase cards. London Underground was probably the most amenable, while RATP, NS, SNCB, and DB rejected my credit cards and in some cases, both credit and debit cards. The customer service agents were generally able to process my US credit card with no problem.

As for credit cards, a large number of Japanese retailers gave a collective F.U. to credit card fees and simply do not accept them, and the country is safe enough that carrying around the equivalent of $5,000 cash in your wallet has never been unwise

That's admittedly the thing that bothered me about Japan. At least with Europe, I can control cash withdrawals to minimize excess currency, but the need to have so much cash puts me at risk of returning with wasted money. I'd agree with Japan being safe enough to walk around with what would be insane levels of cash, but I'd much prefer not to take out 75000 yen at the airport ATM in order to be functional.

The few I've been in definitely are, but it is a cooperative, so there are different owners of groups of stores. I've been in about 4 of their over 300 stores so I'm not in a position to make a general statement, but I like the ones I've shopped, and that they still run a newspaper ad, not just flyers.

I thought they had to sell some Buffalo branches due to the concurrent presence of Key Bank and too much concentration.

Buffalonians understand the importance of commerce and travel to Canada over Ohioans. That also grand-fathered from the Marine Midland/HSBC era.

My local (NJ) county-based, privately-owned, savings bank has unlimited ATM transaction and surcharge reimbursements. I also know in the Cortland, NY area, some people have pulled their money out of Key Bank and and went to First National Bank of Dryden. Nicer to deal with locals.

They got as high as 58 stores. They had a major impact on retail in the US since they found a way around price fixing laws in effect at the time. The "membership" concept lives on in a refined form today in some major retail operations.

In Spain I solved the issue of returning with the excess cash by spending every last cent on duty free, and then paying for the rest by credit card. This may have been inconvenient given that I ended up staying in the country for another day (see metal tube follies thread), but that was fully paid by the airline.

Heh, the group that had the stores around here, somehow went belly up, and to keep the stores going, Wakefern actually now owns them - the owning group is known as, Shop Rite Supermarkets, inc. One of the things they started doing was using my local store as test bed for a lot of things, like having a gas station.

Have a friend who is the area union rep for the local SR stores, and he has some stories....

There was a Master's on Main Street, which at some point in the early 70's became "Baxter's"- they literally just changed out 2 letters in the sign. Baxter's didn't last long, and the building (actually a former theater) stood abandoned for a LONG time.

There was also a Master's on Hylan Blvd (Staten Island), near Tysen's Lane. That lasted into the 1990s. It's a stuffy Stop & Shop now.

The dogs at the "portable" Nathan's stands you see around the City aren't the same. I could tell the difference when I stopped at one one the Thruway last week which was much better (and the fries again are great).

I remember an article several years back when some kids from the midwest were visiting the City as part of a program. They went to Coney Island and stopped at Nathans one day. The kids convinced them to take them back to Coney Island so they could go to Nathans again before they left. The kids wanted those dogs and fries one last time.

The one on Pike Street has been "redeveloped"

That's putting it mildly. :-(

Pathmark/A&P had a sweetheart deal with that location, but it also turned out there was a loophole where they could sell the lease for lots of $$$. The city may or may not have tried to fight it, but ultimately there was nothing that could be done. Add in the damage caused by Sandy, and the store was doomed. In the end, Pathmark/A&P still went bankrupt. I found it odd, though, that the side building (which used to be the Pathmark drugstore and some other leased space) not only has been empty for years, it hasn't been demolished in the latest development.

The residents of that development ("1 Manhattan Square") will surely enjoy the ambience of Manhattan Bidge subway trains.
