As for credit cards, a large number of Japanese retailers gave a collective F.U. to credit card fees and simply do not accept them, and the country is safe enough that carrying around the equivalent of $5,000 cash in your wallet has never been unwise

That's admittedly the thing that bothered me about Japan. At least with Europe, I can control cash withdrawals to minimize excess currency, but the need to have so much cash puts me at risk of returning with wasted money. I'd agree with Japan being safe enough to walk around with what would be insane levels of cash, but I'd much prefer not to take out 75000 yen at the airport ATM in order to be functional.
