What was true is that no one would bid while that requirement was there, whatever else was going on. Bottom line is, they won't be compatible.

Sumitomo was going to bid and the state was bending over backwards to give them the contract when Nippon decided not to go ahead. The compatibility requirement was only a factor in their decision in that they were being forced to bid at an unreasonable price; Nippon would have lost their shirts on this contract (as will CRRC).

The R179s are not compatible with the R160s due to some fundamental differences in network design, something that would have happened anyway due to parts availability, if not for the R179s then definitely for the R211s no matter who won the contract.

"...because all your rolling stock is interchangeable, is something we've forgotten about with the tech trains. "

Exactly. What comes to mind here is when the LIRR ordered its fleet of "Zip" MU cars from Pullman in 1963, the bid specified that they be able to run with anything electric in its fleet.
Thus, it was not unusual to see the new Pullmans with that "Steel Thruway to the Fair Gateway" painted on the sides running with MP-54s that were close to 50 years old.

The LIRR had the same spec for the M-3 cars, which were intended from the beginning to accommodate ridership growth. They had to be compatible with the existing M-1 fleet. Ditto MNRR's M-4 and M-6 classes, with the M-2s. Interestingly, though, MNRR's M-3A cars only ran with their own class, at least in the '80s...

My MAC operating system is capable of updating to the next one whenever it comes out so the trains can be designed the same way.

I have an IMac and every so often I get a notice about an update. I just load it , and away we go!

Exactly my point. The same thing should be able to be done with trains!

I have a Gateway, and I've increased it's memory and SDD to 1 T.

NTT types
Subsystems should be able to swapped out for UPGRADES to bring previous components to State of the art for compatibility.

Why bother if they will never need to run together anyway?

Who says they would never need to ? When you have 5 of these and 5 of those available, you can't run a train. There are to be only 40 in 5 car sets. Minority oddballs such as these tend not to fare well on large systems

They shouldn't need to be separable at all. Toronto Rocket is a solid 6 x 76' car consist. Similarly Montreal's Azur is 9 cars totaling 500' long.

In Tokyo JR East takes it a step further, they have a massively large system and they run most of it in full length unitized consists. The conductor uses the rear cab. The longest seems to be 11 x 65' cars (longer trains are made up with 10+5, 9+3, or 11+4). To make it easier for passengers to ID trains, they also reduce flexibility by painting the equipment with a color stripe based on what line it runs on. When they reassign equipment from one line to another, it goes into the paint shop. Despite these two inflexibilities they still have an operating profit.

One of the lines in Montreal runs 6 car trains.
One of the Toronto lines runs 4 car trains.
Just because they run full length trains does not mean they do not break up such sets when 1 car needs attention. These full length train are seldom numerically matced. They even mix Siemens and Alston R160's on occasion, which I am sure they would rather not do..

Obviously in Toronto, they no longer have that luxury, but the Yonge-University subway has a uniform fleet. We do not and never will.

ENY will soon be a mess of R143's, R160's, and R179's, then add in Canarsie-CBTC, Queens Blvd-CBTC, and No-CBTC trains, and they will have quite a challenge making up trains, running them where they belong, and you will see 4 car sets lying all over the place when they put consists together after maintetance.

They also got the C-3's to not only to operate wit the DE/DM, but also tested and run with a MARC cab car. They can adapt MU cables.
I thought it was C-3 Cab cars operating with MRAC Coaches.

Yeh, the C-3 cab car with the MARC cars, I forgot. When they get 21 MARC cars next summer, they need to do that. They can't mess with the ASCES in the MARC cab cars, which they will run as trailers so as to have bathrooms.

For Toronto, the 4 car line has special 4 car sets of Rockets dedicated to it. The current 6 car line (Blue) in Montreal is keeping the 3+3 sets of MR-73, as is the Yellow line which is 6 or 9 cars depending on if an event is going on.

A single long set has less cabs to purchase/maintain and more passenger space because of it. It's a tradeoff.
