They shouldn't need to be separable at all. Toronto Rocket is a solid 6 x 76' car consist. Similarly Montreal's Azur is 9 cars totaling 500' long.

In Tokyo JR East takes it a step further, they have a massively large system and they run most of it in full length unitized consists. The conductor uses the rear cab. The longest seems to be 11 x 65' cars (longer trains are made up with 10+5, 9+3, or 11+4). To make it easier for passengers to ID trains, they also reduce flexibility by painting the equipment with a color stripe based on what line it runs on. When they reassign equipment from one line to another, it goes into the paint shop. Despite these two inflexibilities they still have an operating profit.
