When I worked for a manufacturing company near the Culver el in the mid 80's, shortly before demolition, a couple of adventurous young men tried to drive a "borrowed" car up one of the station staircases one weekend. Didn't get too far up the stairs. So they tried again at speed. Got a little higher up.

Must have been a narrow car, those stair cases aren't that too wide.

I would think that the TA would have pulled up the rails and/or the ties for reuse (perhaps in the yards) or sold them for scrap before turning the structure over to the demolition contractor. Even the relatively short and narrow elevated trains could carry a lot more passengers than the bus services which replaced them.

Both, since in the station area they share many pillars or bents.

Its somewhat like what they did at Queensboro Plaza. When the north half of the station was torn down, much leftover and unused supports & ironwork was left in place to maintain "structural integrity" of what was left up.

Ties and rails were still on the el remnant until the late 1990s. I saw them myself.

I remember the first time I went out there- 7/3/89. I was amazed at how intact the structure still was- really an almost complete facility from Lewis Avenue north. And it stayed that way, probably till about 1998 or 1999.

It was a big full sized mid-70's Buick I think. Smashed a bunch of stuff on the stair case which by then was abandoned, you could see it had rust deterioration already. Damaged staircase was then removed by front end loader bucket.

Although I am not a civil engineer, I fail to see how a structure above one that is in use would be needed to maintain any sort of structural integrity. Retaining the unused 3 Ave el platform at Gun Hill Rd is another matter since the abandoned potion of the structure is below the one still in use and would be needed to support the one above.

When I first rode the Fkln Shuttle in either late 1958 or early 1959, the short portion of the Fulton St el structure that remained at Fkln Av still had all its ties and rails intact although extremely rusty. When I returned there about a year or so later, the rails and ties had been removed.

I believe as was mentioned in another post that the structure is used to carry electrical cables from a substation to the eBway Bkln el. A similar situation in Manhattan existed but for a shorter period when the 3 Av el between 34 St and 42 St had to be kept up for a year after the 3 Av el ceased operations to supply power from a Manhattan el substation to the Flushing Line.

I actually asked if that would have been a possibility now, when they're rebuilding the connector viaduct, we're it not for the structure now on the old platform. Nobody answered that question, but there are two issues - the first is that the el structure was built for narrower cars, so the platform edge would have to be cut back. The second is if the girder placement - further down the line, it wasn't only the platform edge that was too close, but the actual structural girders - which, if also the case at Broadway, would make it impossible to run B division cars to the upper level.

subfan

That just re-enforces the thought that the city was in a hurry to rid Myrtle Ave of the el thus preventing any efforts to resurrect the service. Normal el destruction usually is the remove the tracks etc first before the acetlylene hits the iron.

After the 6th Ave el closed on 12/04/1938, the section above 53rd St, from 9th Ave to Broadway was kept to connect to the power station there.

The Broadway-Brooklyn spur, from west of Marcy Ave to Broadway Ferry was kept primarily for the power cable connection from Kent Ave. Gate cars were also laid up there until August, 1927, when sufficient steel cars were found for rush-hour B'way-Bklyn service.

Also, a section on Grand Ave, south of Myrtle, on the Lexington Ave el was kept up for the same reason. The underground-to-elevated power cable was about 2 blocks away on Grand. That portion of the Lex el was demolished, along with the Myrtle Ave el's Grand Ave station in early 1953.

But the GO that Joe Korman posted on his website shows pretty clearly that the TA abandoned the line all the way to the switches south of Central Avenue

Here's the story about that arch span over Flatbush Ave. When the Myrtle Ave el was built, there was no Flatbush Ave underneath it. Flatbush Ave at that time ended at Fulton St.. Then Flatbush Ave Extension was built when the Manhattan Bridge opened.

In the years when Flatbush Ave Ext was carrying vehicular traffic, there were accidents involving cars hitting the el pillars that were in the middle of Flatbush Ave Ext.

Around 1932 or 33, the arch span that was featured in my photos was built to eliminate the el pillars in the street. This reconstruction was done while Myrtle and Lexington Ave el service was ongoing with motorman told to proceed at a slow speed in the construction area. If that was today, the line would be shut down and bustituted.

The original Myrtle el structure in that area dated to 1888.

The Flatbush Ave. viaduct structure was erected sometime around 1914 or '15.
.
When Flatbush Ave was extended from Fulton St. to the then new Manhattan Bridge (hence "Flatbush Ave. Extension") in 1909, and it was soon discovered that them new fangled auto-mobiles, lorry trucks and probably bicycles would collide into the original 1888 pillars that were in the middle of the roadways.

There are some photos online (I think NYPL) of the construction of the Flatbush Ave Ext viaduct being built and some others in the Transit Museum collection of the reconstruction at Navy St. structure in 1944 to remove the remainder of the old main line structure and add structure to remove a pillar and also at Vanderbilt Ave. structure in the 40's to remove pillars from the intersecting roadways.

There's a photo online of the Manhattan Bridge 3 Cent Line terminal at Fulton St. looking north with the old Myrtle structure still in place, and a later photo of the new structure while the MB3CL was still running. Since the MB3CL's new cars were delivered beginning in 1914 and that line's closure was in 1929, the viaduct was built between those dates. When I find more definition, I'll post.

The structural girders at Bway/Myrtle upper were different from the ones at the other Myrtle stations between there and Bridge St so that wouldn’t have been an issue. The structural girders at the other stations were built the way they were to allow for the staircases from the platform to the street.

I'll go with the theory that they were not so ruthless to tear down the part down to Lewis Street should operations had ever wanted to send the M shuttle there instead and not disrupt Bway/Jamaica trains with at-grade crossings.

With escalators and escalators, there is some merit to it. Imagine if they had done so as they rebuild the Cut.

Then it's too bad they didn't cut back the platform edges so regular B division equipment could use it as a terminal. That would have been useful in general when the M wasn't running through, as it would have eliminated the need for an at-grade merge, and would have been particularly useful now, when it could have allowed a direct connection with Manhattan-bound trains while the viaduct is being rebuilt.

I remember the remaining track going all the way to the switches, the switches were removed right after service on the old Myrtle ended. Track was there into the 90's. I think it was removed only after neighborhood folks complained that old track parts and other crap was falling off the el and hitting people and their cars.

The MTA always knew which areas of the city were politically impotent.

Maybe because of this, the 3rd Av el, pre-mature demolition of the Jamacia el decimating ridership on the whole line, threatening to kill east of ENY or Crescent Street, RPA's plans in the 1980's to tear down els all over the city that got press coverage, and years of distrust of MTA in general, people were on-guard for the Franklin shuttle.

The switches were ripped out long before the 1980's. But that was probably because the tracks were redone some time in the early 80's on the M part of the line. I don't know if they were ripped out prior to the M's running tracks being replaced in the early 80's.
The tracks did remain until the early to mid 90's on the incline, at least into the Broadway station upstairs.
It was around the early 90's that they ripped up the upper platform and replaced it with that structure that is there now.
Until that point, right into the late 80's and very early 90's, the upstairs station was completely intact, right down to the signs themselves.

The second photo is how I remembered it right through the mid 90's. The Metro bound track was removed somewhat prior to the other side. They were all gone very soon after the top photo.

Yes, amazing! The entire Broadway El, the Myrtle between Wyckoff and Broadway, and the Fulton El between Franklin and Atlantic were entirely rebuilt in place, and realigned from two tracks to three, and stations rebuilt, all while service continued to roll. And with 1910's technology and equipment no less.

I wish I'd have know about the Fulton remnant standing there so long. I'd definitely have gone to see it.

The fancy railings and some other features did remain into the early 90's there, until the shuttle was rebuilt. I only saw it once before it was closed down for the reconstruction.

I was going to point out that you're full of shit as usual, but I doubt it would do any good.

After all, you are a self-confessed white supremacist. You have stated that you think racial equality is, in your own words, "nonsense and propaganda." And in numerous previous threads, you have demonstrated that your reading comprehension is so poor that you are functionally illiterate. Your diseased brain is in dire need of some percussive maintenance that I am unfortunately unable to provide over the internet. Perhaps you should take a moment to ponder the life choices that led you to this pitiable condition where your sense of self-worth is entirely contingent on believing that having pale skin makes you inherently superior despite your complete lack of personal success, social contribution, or community standing.
