The original Myrtle el structure in that area dated to 1888.

The Flatbush Ave. viaduct structure was erected sometime around 1914 or '15.
.
When Flatbush Ave was extended from Fulton St. to the then new Manhattan Bridge (hence "Flatbush Ave. Extension") in 1909, and it was soon discovered that them new fangled auto-mobiles, lorry trucks and probably bicycles would collide into the original 1888 pillars that were in the middle of the roadways.

There are some photos online (I think NYPL) of the construction of the Flatbush Ave Ext viaduct being built and some others in the Transit Museum collection of the reconstruction at Navy St. structure in 1944 to remove the remainder of the old main line structure and add structure to remove a pillar and also at Vanderbilt Ave. structure in the 40's to remove pillars from the intersecting roadways.
