The switches were ripped out long before the 1980's. But that was probably because the tracks were redone some time in the early 80's on the M part of the line. I don't know if they were ripped out prior to the M's running tracks being replaced in the early 80's.
The tracks did remain until the early to mid 90's on the incline, at least into the Broadway station upstairs.
It was around the early 90's that they ripped up the upper platform and replaced it with that structure that is there now.
Until that point, right into the late 80's and very early 90's, the upstairs station was completely intact, right down to the signs themselves.
