It would not suprise me if he gets spanked by his bosses for talking to the media. In my 38 yrs with Metro-North, many were spent in customer service in GCT. We were given strict orders, whenever there was an "incident" & someone sticks a mike in your face, you are to tell them to talk to the MN press office for any information then walk away. This order was backed up with threats of discipline. Over the years, a few of colleagues got short term unpaid vacations for such violations. |

Chris,The locomotive is possibly undamaged, so somebody should be able to report its number. The NTSB spokesperson said at one point that the recorder was being removed, but later (on 5 p.m. tv) she said the outward-looking camera would hold the data! To me, the big question is whether the locomotive was shoving or idling for the last quarter-mile into the terminal. |

Who gives a shit? The train crashed, therefore the system failed. Nobody ever says Three Mile Island #2 did its job, it had a fucking meltdown. That's not supposed to happen. The best way to avoid this stuff is to not crash. It's pretty freaking easy, look at how the various JRs have done over the decades. A train crash in Japan is pretty much an international event, because they don't happen very often. |

It's not so much laziness as it is that a reporter is a story teller who writes up what other people tell them and then try to balance differing views according to what their editor tells them they want. Emphasis on story-telling and being able to pull it together in a proper word count.Reporters depend on sources they know for "facts" if they're not sure or quote what someone tells them is a "fact." Today, your story might be about a train wreck, tomorrow it'll be who won the lottery. Can't invest that much time in details given that "specialist" reporters who work a particular beat can't be afforded by media these days. Many hats to wear, no need for them to fit. Blame shrinking circulation and pay for that. |

Agreed. Also the first car is almost certainly one of the more crowded ones due to proximity to the Hoboken exits; despite this no one *on* the train was killed which is arguably the most important job of the railcar. If anyone was on the fence about FRA crashworthiness specs, this (and the NH line accident a few years ago) should be enough of an argument to not roll them back. If this was a euro-spec car I suspect that while the people in the station would have fared better, those on the train would have fared far worse. And in the station you have a better chance at dodging an impending calamity than you do on the train, so the tradeoff is better the current way. |

Did you pencil out the ke of a train at 20mph? Them things is heavy!Keep in mind there was a 275,000 locomotive in back. If the throttle control was somehow jammed in forward rather than idle, that could have been adding up to, mmm, ~85,000 pounds of push through the length of the crash. |

Also the first car is almost certainly one of the more crowded ones due to proximity to the Hoboken exits;Except that passengers are not permitted to exit from the front of the car, so they were likely at the rear end of the lead car. " If anyone was on the fence about FRA crashworthiness specs, this [blah blah, heavy good, learning lessons bad!]" Absolutely not. How can you possibly make that argument when we've just seen a train depart the track area resulting in a fatality? Regardless of why the train did not stop, it cannot be debated that the bumping block was inadequate to the task of protecting the structure from the train. The car struck and travelled past past the bumping block before striking the structure. Neither the bumping block or the car were designed to absorb any meaningful amount of crash energy without deforming either the railcar's cabin or the station's structure. There could not be a better illustration of the dangers present even at low speeds with the FRA's insistence on absolute structural rigidity. If this was a euro-spec car I suspect that while the people in the station would have fared better, those on the train would have fared far worse. And in the station you have a better chance at dodging an impending calamity than you do on the train, so the tradeoff is better the current way. You suspect wrongly. At most terminal stations in Europe the bumping blocks are equipped to dissipate energy when they're struck by a train. The displacement may be a matter of a few feet, or something a bit more elaborate: By Kabi - Own work, Public Domain, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=2829370 This device is claimed to stop an 940 ton train from about 10mph in twenty or so feet. The NJT train involved in this crash was less than half that weight. And in the station you have a better chance at dodging an impending calamity than you do on the train, so the tradeoff is better the current way. There should not have to be a tradeoff either way. While there should be no contact with the bumping block, when needed the bumping block should be something more than a mere speedbump. Similarly the train should be capable of absorbing some of the impact. |

If the cab car and bumping block had incorporated some crash energy absorbing elements the train likely never would have exited the track area. |
