It's not so much laziness as it is that a reporter is a story teller who writes up what other people tell them and then try to balance differing views according to what their editor tells them they want. Emphasis on story-telling and being able to pull it together in a proper word count.

Reporters depend on sources they know for "facts" if they're not sure or quote what someone tells them is a "fact." Today, your story might be about a train wreck, tomorrow it'll be who won the lottery. Can't invest that much time in details given that "specialist" reporters who work a particular beat can't be afforded by media these days. Many hats to wear, no need for them to fit. Blame shrinking circulation and pay for that.
