I'd be happiest to see a full Utica Av subway going all the way up to Broadway. Even if it didn't go into Manhattan, you have a connection available to the Fulton St and J/M/Z services. The dream is that it would go all the way up to the S4th stop and through a new tunnel to Houston St, but I'm not quite sure 6th Av can handle another local service. Aren't S4th and Fulton St stations already built? |

It was never used in revenue service and is now completely covered with the Atlantic Terminal's new construction.There is no easy way to connect the SB IRT with the LIRR at this point. |

And the 7 extension made economic sense.The 7 extension was a colossal waste of money because rail service could have been provided for 10% of the cost. A station could have been built within the rail yard before it was covered over. This would have been relatively cheap, about $100 million. Service would have been provided by an LIRR shuttle between this station and rarely used track 21 in Penn Sta. Fare collection would be by Metrocard at the rail yard station. There would be fare collection for entering and leaving like SIRT at St. George. |

Leaving aside for the moment the totalcost, while you may be correct that such a shuttle could have been implemented on the cheap, connecting tothe general subway network is muchmore useful over the long run. next up should be infilling the unbuilt station and extending the 7 south into Chelsea.As to DeBlasio's ideas, someone should send him the Triboro RX plan. That should be possible at relatively low cost to implement while facilitating multiple crosstown connections. If the version is built including Hell Gate we get even more useful connectivity. |

One thing I did post about not too long ago elsewhere was an extension of the (N) into the Bronx. continuing past its current terminal at Ditmars across 31st Street in Queens and across to Rikers Island before going to The Bronx (via two new bridges as elevated) with new stops as follows:20th Avenue (Queens) Hillside Avenue-Rikers Island Food Service Drive This then goes underground after Food Service Drive with stops as follows: Spofford Avenue-Hunts Point Food Market Westchester Avenue (Elder Avenue, Transfer to 6) East 180th Street (Transfer to 2/5) Neill Avenue-Williams Bridge Road Wilson Avenue-Pelham Parkway (Jacobi Medical Center), where it terminates. As part of this, new OOS transfers would be in place between Queens Plaza and Queensboro Plaza AND between 36th Street on the QB Line and 36th Avenue on the Astoria Line so those on the QB line looking to go to the Bronx can do that without having to go through Manhattan. This to me would serve untapped potential ridership of those looking for The Bronx from Queens. |

Since Utica Ave is wide and not particularly congested build a light rail at street level between Kings Plaza and Fulton or Broadway. Make the transfers easy where it crosses the subway. Have it run to Broadway/Myrtle and make the transfer to the J/M/Z an easy one, with extended express hours into Manhattan in the am and from Manhattan in the PM. (I'm not familiar with Malcom X blvd, so I don't know how wide that is.)Much cheaper, and just as likely to get built. IOW, not likely at all. |

The only portion of the West Side not within 1/2 mile of an existing 8th Ave station are points west of 11th Ave. That's 1 avenue block between 11th Ave and the Hudson River. Manhattan starts coming to a point at the Battery starting at 23rd St. The Hudson River is within 1/2 mile of existing subway stations south of 20th St. As I noted in an earlier post, providing services to where none exist should be the goal - not duplicating existing services. |

Those are two commodities in short supply. Cars are also space hogs. A pedestrian or public transit rider occupies about 5 sq ft. A bicycle rider about 14 sq ft. A private car driver about 105 sq ft. |

There are very few residents who live along Utica Avenue south of Kings Highway. And the businesses that are there are mostly the kind that would suffer no detriment from having an el in front. The LIRR off-peak is practically empty weekday mornings from Atlantic Ave to Jamaica since most people can't afford the off-peak fares. Meanwhile the J train at East New York is overcrowded with people who ride all the way through to Sutphin and Parsons. The vast majority of customers know the LIRR exists, but can't afford it.The mayor knows what he's talking about. I'd use it all the time if it accepted my Unlimited Metrocard. Until then, there's the G to the E, or the A/C to the J. |

Not commenting on your opinion here, but the original carpetbaggers were HEROES who came down south, despite the danger from violent, slavery-loving reactionaries, to rebuild the South and crush the southern spirit. Too bad they failed. |
