Maybe six or seven years ago I attended a public hearing about extending the N or R to LaGuardia. I think the hearing was held at the Kaufman Studio. The chief proposal seemed to be a squealing turn east at 21st Avenue or Ditmars Blvd and a dive into a tunnel. Anyhow, it was obvious that residents knew that elevated subway trains create a din and they opposed it strongly no matter where it would run, even through Sunnyside and Woodside. An elevated route over the Grand Central Parkway was also presented and rejected by many.--- Helen Marshall was a speaker. |

True, but a couple of things stand out compared to some of the issues faced previously:One, the proposals in the Guliani/Pataki era had any extention to LGA consisting of actual NYC subway service entering the airport. Considering how loud we know NYCT trains to be (and remember, in the 1990s there was no NTTs), I can see their concerns. However, using the JFK airtrain technology, I can see things being significantly quieter. Second, there would be no construction on the actual Astoria line itself to disrupt service nor would this proposal result in any construction within residential neighborhoods. Third, with my idea they could always put it underground. |

Airtrain to Willets point will be shorter, and even less disruptive. the issue is not saving time so much as providing the service. having to go underground will add time and money. |

That's what I though one of the plans was. Extend the el to the end of 31st Street onto ConEd's property take a right turn across the ballfields onto 19th Street. Follow 19th street to LGA. 19th Street is all commercial/industrial buildings. |

Sure, if nobody on 19th Ave objects. But, I'm sure a lot more of residents/merchants on that 3 block stretch of 31st St, from Ditmars to 19th Ave, will oppose it. |

Why not build it from Jamaica (current Air Train station). Tracks make a right turn in addition to the left turn to JFK, ride above the Van Wyck over past Roosevelt Ave., then to LaG. The route isn't that much further, and gives a connection from LaG to JFK with a transfer at Jamaica. Someone coming from LI would have to travel the LIRR to Woodside, then backtrack to Willis Point. From the city, Penn Station has more options than the 7 line, and with East Side Access, Grand Central will be covered also. |

"Someone coming from LI would have to travel the LIRR to Woodside, then backtrack to Willis Point. "This could be solved by building a wye where the main line meets the Port Wash line. This would be like the wye where the Harlem and Hudson lines meet near Yankee Stadium. That would also allow game day service from Long Island. |

From a previous message:"I've been thinking that the Astoria Line should be converted into a subway. People would stop getting pissed by the loud (though relatively quieter than it was few years back) elevated line." Considering the subway station spacing guidelines that have followed since the time of the construction of the Astoria segment (circa 1920's), the neighborhood could indeed find itself with fewer and widely spaced stations compared to what exists now. Just a thought. Mike |

The 39 Ave. stop would be kept as the portal would start just north of there, where the street runs uphill northbound. There could be a new entrance near 38 Ave. But putting the portal in would eliminate the stop at 36 Ave, where there is no connecting bus line and little business activity. Underground, the Broadway stop would be kept, given the busy commercial area there and the bus line. But it would also have a south entrance at 34 Ave. The 30 Ave. and Astoria Blvd. stops are fairly close and could be combined, with entrances at both those avenues. The Ditmars stop would be rebuilt to be actually at Ditmars rather than 200 feet south, facilitating the bus transfer. And being underground at that point would make it politically feasible to extend the line to LAG.Putting the line underground would have many benefits (including ADA accessibility to each new station), but it would cost too much. |

"...rather than 200 feet south,"Often wondered why they stopped construction seemingly in the middle of the block as opposed to ending the line directly over Ditmars. Maybe thats why all the destination signs from Gate cars to R-38s read ASTORIA instead of Ditmars Blvd. |

There is an interesting question as to why the Queensboro Plaza station is elevated in the first place? Take away the usual explanation of economics - as in money, where there other reasons. IF, as in if money were no object even in the 1920's would the Flushing and Astoria lines be built as underground subways instead of as elevated lines? The one thing to consider is the connection to/from the 59th Street for the Second Avenue elevated line.Definitely transit history, as well as the look of NYC would be different if certain events were changed just a bit. In any case, just fun stuff to think about. Mike |

"There is an interesting question as to why the Queensboro Plaza station is elevated in the first place?"Considering how much effort was made to make Queens Plaza pretty after the bridge was completed, makes you wonder if anyone was aware that all that work was just a few years from being ripped up by EL construction. Mismanagement, Ignorance, graft...who knows the reason why all that work was done & money wasted. Maybe someone told somebody that the rapid transit line considered would be a subway, thus all those cosmetics at the plaza. We'll never know. I'll guess the reason that QBP was constructed as an El station was that construction twoards Corona, as the Interborough planned, would have been prohibitive going under Sunnyside Yards in terms of money & geological problems tunneling in that area that came with it. Loose sandstone & underground streams permiate the area as was discovered during construction of the East Side Access. Tunneling in those conditions, under the Sunnyside yards would have been time consuming & very costly using early 20th century construction techniques. |

I have a very strong suspicion that when the Astoria Line was built, it was intended that the structure be continued further on, turning east along Ditmars hence the reason for the statin being a bit south of Ditmars itself. However, Lefferts Blvd station also ends slightly before Lefferts itself so it’s not that uncommon for certain stations to be a little off from the streets for which they are named. By the way, it was common practice for the BMT to used just neighborhood names as destinations for certain lines. The BMT steels had the destinations, “Jamaica’ and “Canarsie” rather than 168 St or Rockaway Pky on their signs.Even “Coney Island” was not the actual name of the station at that location which is officially “Stillwell Avenue.” Although I have not seen any pictures of the IRT cars when they ran to Astoria, but i Believe they carried the full name of the state which was originally “Ditmars Avenue” before that thoroughfare was upgraded to a boulevard like Lefferts was. The BMT was a bit inconsistent with their train signals since Myrtle Av trains read “Metropolitan Av” and Fulton St trains read “Lefferts Av.” rather than merely “Middle Village” or “Richmond Hill." |

That was to speed trolley riders to Manhattan. Never came across any potential extensions on Ditmars Ave/Blvd. In the 1920's, LGA was a small airport called North Beach Apt, so why turn east on Ditmars?Speaking of the BMT, I do remember some Standards that said RIDGEWOOD, instead of METROPOLITAN AVE. |
