The R-12s had ASTORIA on its side roll signs.

Your memory is playing tricks on you.

However, the route sign did say Astoria Local. However, they blacked out the "Flushing," leaving only "Local" for Flushing Local, when the R12/14/15 ran on the Flushing Line.
