It's maintaining a physical connection and I have it from a road foreman that they may even be retaining thru peak service. So nothing has been set in stone operationally. And even if it had been, again, LIRR has no choice but to retain it. They want to add service but they'll have nowhere to send the trains. NYP is maxed out and all the capacity benefits of ESA will be lost if they do away FBA. Sorry, I'm just giving you the reality of the situation. |

Ha, sorry, I didn't bother to look at the numbers. I was just assuming the increase since you had said something along the lines of a 1% overall increase. My mistake! Still, Woodhaven Blvd buses in general have always been congested. It's nothing new. And assuming each bus can hold an average of 60 people, that's 858 buses per day required to move all the people. You don't think that's a slight hint that something more efficient is needed? |

Fair enough. Why aren't people flocking to Queens right now on weekends to take advantage of city ticket? And what about the parking lots immediately adjacent to the RR. Who governs those? $2.50 is too low if you ask me. I'd say full time city ticket (how much is that these days?) or something comparable to the express bus fare would be more appropriate of a fit |

The most heavily used bus stops are transfer stops to the subway. This suggests each run may have high passenger turnover during a complete run. Another caveat is that the Q53 runs past Woodhaven/Queens Blv to Woodside. The bus stop data in one of NYCDOT's reports hints that riders between Woodhaven/Queens Blv and Woodside may account for 1/3 of the Q53's ridership. |

Why aren't people flocking to Queens right now on weekends to take advantage of city ticket? Many are and local Little Neck, Douglaston and Bayside residents are complaining. It's not a flood because most commuters use monthly or weekly tickets. Also, zone 3 rush hour service is anemic. $2.50 is too low if you ask me. Guiliani proclaimed one fare one city, when he abolished the SI Ferry fare and inaugurated bus/subway Metrocard transfers. It has pluses and minuses. However, it's going to very difficult to turn back the clock. City ticket is $4. |

It's a 4-track line. You would largely eliminate the existing Harlem locals and run most Westchester/CT trains via the express tracks.Having been a regular rider of Harlem Line locals from 2004 through 2006, I can assure you that those trains are far less than a quarter of all the trains between Melrose and Woodlawn. Eliminate them and there is no way to run the remaining trains on 2 tracks. Also, Fordham is an important stop for NH Line and Harlem express trains. You could give Fordham center island platforms, but that would create additional problems. |

It's either that or the Queens Blvd local tracks. And there is not a whole lot of room for a third service on the QB local. The LIRR Main Line appears to have room for six tracks from Winfield Junction (PW Branch junction) to Whitepot Junction in Rego Park, where the Rockaway Beach line branched off. I suggest using the two southernmost trackways for the RB service. If there's not enough room through Woodside, then the subway tracks can branch underground through there - though that would make an expensive project even more expensive. |

Anytime something is postponed to some time “later on” it never happens. Best to rebuild it for subway operation right away if it gets built at all. Apparently passenger traffic under LIRR mgmt wasn’t sufficient for the railroad to retain it which is why it was planned for the city to take it over almost as soon as the IND was built. |

The Belmont Park/Hempstead flyover is definitely needed not only for making it possible to make Belmont Park a park-and-ride, but also given that Belmont Park in a few years could wind up becoming another Racino if the laws are changed. If a Racino happened, then the flyover (and widening of the bridge from the main line to Belmont Park to two tracks) would be very much necessary. |

"If a Racino happened, then the flyover (and widening of the bridge from the main line to Belmont Park to two tracks) would be very much necessary."By the time Belmont gets slot machines, we'll have as many casinos as we have CVS stores and no additional LIRR infrastructure will be needed. I don't see trainloads of people exiting the subway at Aqueduct and I doubt that we would see anything like that at Belmont. Nassau and Suffolk OTB have already been approved for their own slot machines elsewhere. Even when racing was king, it wasn't needed; why would slots be any different? Even when Roosevelt Raceway was still getting 25,000+ on weekends, it never merited an on-premises station, and even as early at the 1970's they ran shuttle buses from Mineola. I will be shocked if a flyover is constructed even if Belmont does get slots. For a park and ride-- maybe, but even that might not attract enough people to justify a flyover. Finally, they used to run railroad trains to Atlantic City. The "ACES" service didn't survive, and that was before the latest boom in casino building outside of New Jersey. |
