I think that line would need more than 20 minute headways, and that's what I'd be proposing for any city zone LIRR service.

Yes, there's space up to White Pot, but through Woodside there's none. You've got the 7 above, 61st St below, and apartments flanking the sides. I'd say either a single track (double where possible) or time shared lower Montauk. Run via the Montauk cutoff and dive down to the 63rd St tunnel from there. Plus you also have then easy access to the S4th St station (via Bushwick branch) should the tunnel from Houston St ever get built. Again, it'd have to be done in a manner that allows freight operations to continue to some degree.

A racino will have little/no bearing on the necessity of a flyover. It would come from a combination of Belmont Park & Ride and increased service coming off the Hempstead branch (either from Hempstead of from a reopened central branch)

It isn't that many stations. You want at least 50% usage off-peak.

I think he's saying it wasn't going to run via the main, it was going to run via Lower Montauk. I don't think anything was ever officially agreed upon actually. I've seen references to running it via the main line and via the lower Montauk

The other problem is that you want to promote Woodhaven Blvd traffic shifting to the train for the entire length. Won't get anyone transferring off buses to get onto this at Ozone Park or whatever the last stop may be, unless you implement a metrocard transfer.

I think the main line approach was the official one that was more developed, so they had to have had various plans for how to get through Woodside.

I still think a time shared lower montauk would be best since you can bring rail transit even more areas that don't have it

That's certainly true. I think lower Montauk to 63rd is a good option too, although you'll have to build a connecting north-south tunnel in LIC to connect Montauk to 63rd - which could allow for transfers between the new line and the E, M, N, R, (revived) W and 7 trains at Queens or Queensboro Plaza as well as the G at Court Square. But this service, too, would be contingent on building at least part of SAS Phase 3, as there would be no room on the 6th Ave or Broadway Line tracks for a Rockaway Park/Lower Montauk service.

My idea is the train coming off the lower Montauk would pretty much u-turn via the Montauk cutoff and dive underground over there to link into the tunnel. It's minimally circuitous and uses existing infrastructure. I wonder if the construction of RBB would reduce ridership on the F (passengers boarding at Roosevelt) to the point that you could cut some F service and make space for RBB trains on 6th Av. It's not the best solution, but it could work until SAS south of 63rd and the Queens Super Express are both built.

Yeah I wonder about that myself. The F is standing room only before getting to Roosevelt Ave, but I think there is a bit more demand for the E from my own personal experience with the QB line. I take the M or R (whichever comes first) to Lex every weekday morning. I notice that when the F pulls in next to my local at Roosevelt, a fair amount of people get off, but it's not like a stampede of people running across the platform for the express. But if it's an E that pulls in next to my local, it is a stampede of people running for that E. So there is that. But you must also take into account the ridership on the Brooklyn end of the F, specifically in Park Slope and Carroll Gardens.
