Steve, it was up in 1966 or 1967- my mistake. I had a valid NJ drivers license, but I wasn't 18, so I couldn't drive in NYC in 1966. As I told you before, I stayed with my great-aunt on Marginal Street east- the one block continuation of New Jersey Ave that deadended at the Highland Blvd overpass. I took the Jamaica el to 168th St, and caught the old Q-17A bus to St John's Univ on the Utopia Pkwy side. I always got on the el at Alabama Ave and, believe me, you could not miss that crane!

If you could find a spot for a bellmouth, it would be cheaper to run the line as an el over the BQE and the GCP, the way AirTrain runs over the Van Wyck. There are no residences along the BQE to object.

The Astoria el was built with 3 tracks to 25th Ave/Hoyt. Hoyt/25th Ave/Astoria Blvd was the only 3 track express station built on that line.

Elkeeper: You've done a lot of research into this. It seems that Ditmars Boulevard was an arbitrary place to end the line. Ditmars Boulevard it not the end of Astoria. Was any consideration ever given to extending the line say to Rikers Island or The Bronx or swinging it east to follow the north shore of Queens?

My idea is to build 2 flyover tracks from the El starting from south of the Astoria Blvd Sta. to run in the middle of the GCP to the airport. They could get by the NIMBYS if the're determined enough to build it. They beat them when airtrain was built down the Van Wyck to JFK. They can be overcome again

The biggest hurdle would be getting by the Connecting RR bridge over the GCP

On the other hand, the express bus from Roosevelt to LGA is such a huge improvement over the prior service, that LGA is now time-competitive with Newark and JFK by public transportation. Is it really a good use of a billion or so to spend it on an LGA connection?

I sometimes wonder about that since S 4 St stops at Union Av. The city probably would have through routed the street at least as far as Stuyvesant Av where the subway would have turned south on its route towards Utica Av much in the same way as 6 Av Manhattan was through routed for the first IND subway and Pitkin Av was through routed with South Rd near 76 St.

I have also championed that idea. There are very few residences along that stretch.

That Connecting RR bridge is a huge hurdle. It appears that a track would fit on either outside flank of the GCP roadway between GCP and the service road right under the bridge. But such a placement would cause the tracks to run into the nearby cross-street overpasses at Steinway and 44th Streets. Possibly those overpasses could be relocated, but at great stress to local traffic.

I said nothing about Manhattan. Manhattan was no longer rural by 1922. You can't say that about Queens which still was mostly farmland.

When I was a very young kid in 1953 in Brooklyn, I remember there still was the occasional horse and wagon in the streets. By then the only ones left were knife sharpeners and scrap dealers. In that year my elementary school was built replacing a pig farm right in the center of Brooklyn. Just because you found a few Midtown Manhattan pictures without any horses does not prove anything.

And how do I know that those pictures were for 1922 and not later like 1927?

Also, 1922 was the first year that traffic lights were introduced. So in addition to cars not being capable of today's speeds, perhaps the lack of traffic lights and only police officers to direct traffic required a 20 mph speed limit. That certainly is not true today. The implication that the speed limit was suitable in 1922 is still suitable today is ridiculous.

Has nothing to do with speeding or not. You should only be in the left lane if there are vehicles in all the other lanes to your right that are going slower than you and thus impeding your forward progress.

I usually stay to the right at the speed limit and everyone passes me.
As is the proper thing to do. Bravo. I also usually stay in the right lane, except that in doing so I end up passing everyone else out who is going slower than me while driving in the lanes to my left, while the right lane is wide open.

" I end up passing everyone else out who is going slower than me while driving in the lanes to my left, while the right lane is wide open."

This American habit of cruising at or below the speed limit in the left lane is dangerous and against the law. In Europe, most everyone stays on the right. If you are in the left lane, and a car comes up behind you, you had better move right pronto or you will be subjected to a barrage of headlight flicking and horn blowing.

Left-lane hoggers here refuse to move right when someone is right behind them. This forces you to swing around them to pass on the right. Even when possible, this is a hazard. When not possible, because there are cars in the right lane going at about the same speed, it leads to a line sometimes a mile long of cars blocked by the lane hog -- who is totally oblivious to how he is slowing down everyone else. Infuriating.

If you're in the right lane in a congested urban freeway segment with entrances and exits, then you may be justified in staying one lane from the right. However, if traffic is only light to moderate, or you are in a more rural area, you should stay all the way right and then move over one lane to the left only while passing entrance and exit ramps.
