More importantly APTA is a lobbying organization, one of the few for public transportation. By singling SEPTA out for praise they can potentially ease the battles SEPTA will encounter in the coming three years as Corbitt and the Pennsyltuckians try to withold more of their funding for having the gaul to do a full cost analysis of compressed natural gas.

And SEPTA has been doing pretty well of late. I have to give them credit for their internet real time arrival info. Admittedly it's a decade behind the rest of the country, but at least it's finally being implemented. I guess APTA figured now was a good time to get in and claim SEPTA is the best before they made a complete hash of their next generation fare payment system.

Also remember that this is an annual award. The APTA isn't saying that SEPTA is the best system of all time, just of 2012, which has been a VERY productive and successful year for the agency.

I read a lot of bad things about Tri-Met, especially regarding the WES and the fact that so many resources were put into the Light Rail system at the expense of the bus system.

I hear a lot of great things Salt Lake City, Denver, and Seattle's systems and hope to ride them very soon!

Intriguingly enough, because it runs on "subway track" there are many people who want to put the line in the same class as a heavy rail subway line. I disagree.

IIRC, the RFP for the Canada Line indicated that PPP was "necessary" for the financing of the line

A request for proposals deeming something "necessary"? That's discrimination.

That's a traditional rapid transit line. The NHSL is essentially a bus on subway tracks.

No, it's not relevant. The MTA is not responsible for getting rid of streetcars in NYC as its predecessor was; whereas SEPTA takes the rap for what's been done to those "temporarily" bustituted streetcar lines and almost-internal-combustituted trolleybus lines.

We have the world greatest subway,railroad,bus and ferry system..so we really dont need street/trolly cars.

Wake me up when we have fare integration between all modes like Berlin or Munich or when the regional railway networks stop acting as if 2 tph is great off-peak service. :-)

You're right. I'll remember that we're better when I'm standing in the cold like an idiot at some NJT, MNRR, or LIRR station to ride in some poorly designed and/or noisy rolling stock that underperforms compared to their German counterpart.

And the only purpose of fare integration is data mining the citizens.

I'd love to know how data mining works in a system with paper tickets, especially in a country so averse to data collection of its citizens, it's too afraid to do an actual census.

As others have pointed out, the purpose of fare integration is to leverage the existing network to allow the rider to use the best way and combination of modes to get from one place to another. Whether it be by bus, tram, U-Bahn, S-Bahn, or Regio, the rider is given ample opportunities to maximize the transit system and minimize their travel time which makes transit far more attractive to both regular and occasional travellers.

Only in as much as they should both be converted to much more conventional LRTs integrated with other lines to achieve lower operating costs through economies of scale.

The Liberty Bell line was an interurban. It was never part of the P&W, just had trackage rights to reach 69th Street.

Meaning it's a rapid transit track. Looks no different than any at grade line here in NYC, like the Sea Beach or Brighton. It's not a trolley. And the operation (driver in front with a farebox) is pure BUS.

Cool. I never knew they ran the AJ's on it. Surprised the wide gauge cars fit, even with the goofy looking standard trucks. How did they collect fares with these cars?

They're 50 years old. The should have been retired 10 years ago. Every trip I've ever had on them has resulted in a bumpy, jumpy ride associated with a strong smell of burning ozone. 6 more months may be asking too much.

The CTA Skokie Swift was once like that. The single-unit PCC "L" cars had a shorter distance between the cab and the first side door so as to accommodate a farebox when entering. Those cars could also be in an 8 car consist down the State Street Subway.

The boundaries between bus, trolley, and subway become very blurred.

In Manhattan during the TARS days and in Wash DC, there was no overhead since underground conduit was required in those locations, therefore the Norristown line certainly qualifies as a trolley or in modern parlance a "light rail" system.

SEPTA purchased standard gauge trucks from the PATH K cars that were being scrapped. While I never rode the AJs on the Norristown Line, I did ride the CTA cars and on those, an additional operator was assigned as a sort of C/R to open the doors and collect the fares so I imagine the same thing was done with the AJs.

As for TVM's, what type of utility will that expense host? People buy their passes at the end/beginning of the month, and that's it. Actually those people should probably get them mailed to them now frankly versus waiting in line once a month.

Until about 55. The newest ones, built just after the war, were actually the first to go.

The last MP54's running (the E6 subclass) were built as steam coaches in the 1910's, into MU cars not until 1950, gone by the early 1980's. Their traction motor did not hum.

The E5's also started in the teens, ran until the late 1970's on the Conrail WAS-BAL locals

The DL&W's MUs also started out as steam coaches.

Funny how with modern MUs, the conversion often goes the other way, though (with Arrow Is, LIRR's MP72s and some RDCs, they start out as MUs and get converted to push-pull cars).

The newest ones, built just after the war, were actually the first to go..

Those eight cars (889-896) were oddballs on several fronts. 1-The only Reading MU's to have oil cooled transformers which means PCB issues made them a problem. 2-The only standard cars to have 4 traction motors & were built to be bride & groom sets with trailers modified at Reading Shops from steam coaches. 3-The only RDG MU's built with one cab. 4-The only American Car & Foundary built passenger equipment RDG ever bought.

I thought that was just the DL&W trailers ? The motor cars were built new.
