The transfer at LIC sucks, yes, but the main ridership is people wanting the East Side, that traffic will be by and large gone once ESA opens, so that 3-5000 will be just a trickle. LIC can handle that small trickle, and the diesels have to go there anyway to lay up, HPA will be history.

Yeah, and the whole reason people use the LIRR instead of their cars is traffic to the city. You can't have a train going from every point a to possible work location on LOng Island. A car is easier to use for most of those circumstances, and parking is also generally easy. If people wouldn't be stuck in traffic for hours, and have a hard time parking in the city once they got there, they would take their cars to the city too instead of the LIRR. Parking is not a huge issue either for many Long Island office locations.

Nobody can predict what will happen.

If "your train" in the morning is a zone express, skips Jamaica and goes to NYPS, while you are really headed to the GCT area, will you take another train, possibly a slower one, or 20 minutes later, bound for GCT, assuming one is available ? If that takes 10 minutes longer, or messes up your schedule, you may just keep going to NYPS.

Vice Versa can happen as well.

People will not all neatly sort themselves out between east and west side when at their home station.

There appears to be a public school to the left of the shed in the distance. Is that the public school on 80th Street across the street from the cemetery?

I got confused in the photo because I assumed there would not be a shed on the westbound tracks figuring it was for detraining only, but oh well.

How many grade crossings are along this line between Jamaica and LIC?

LIRR line east of Jamaica out to Rosedale

You might as well go to Valley Stream or you're really bored, Freeport. Of course, for the money that you're considering spending, it may make more sense to just beat the LIRR into submission and force rapid transit practices on it so the off-peak headways don't blow and fare integration provides easy transfers between the railway and the subway like in Germany.

i wish i could find old articles in the Ridgewood Times. they covered this story extensively.

the plan involved running both LIRR and NYCT along the line.

speaking of that line, DOT installed a traffic light on 88th Street in Glendale just feet from the grade crossing. when the light turns red cars overlap the tracks. luckily few trains run that line these days or there would be trouble.

If Diesel territory riders are still going to the west side of 42nd st, people may stay on them to HPA and transfer to the 7, instead of switching to an electric at Jamaica and then to another train at GC. OTOH, if the mainline gets packed with electrics, Diesels may have to use lower Montauk.

What is forgotten in the hoopla is that it will take longer to get to GCT than to NYPS. En toto, less that the double IRT back from NYPS, but if you live on a diesel line, work near GCT, now go to HPA, are under 35, and in good physical condition, the gym workout at HPA and the #7 will be faster than ESA. You won't get ESA access trains anyway - you'll have to change along the way somewhere to an MU.

Possibly 80th St. If you look in the distance, you can see the overpass metal from the Cooper Ave underass. Beyond that the Rockaway trestle over the Montauk Branch. I took a "recent" (well, late 90's) view of this same scene, and it is very similar other than more buildings/homes being on the left. The Cooper underpass metal is visable there too.

Which is admittedly sad. I'm still dubious about building SAS below 42nd Street because other than the hospitals and the Hunter college campus, I can't think of much else, and for a fraction of the cost, you could probably get away with running a streetcar service to connect the really far locations back to rest of the subway.

The problem is that the unless you build the additional tunnels, the line just simply ends up being an orphan that leads to a ferry dock, or you end up wasting time with backtracking over existing ROW (and wasting time) to get to 63rd Street. Unless you're willing to build a tunnel to maximize connections and usability, then I'd argue that the money should just go elsewhere.

The problem is that the unless you build the additional tunnels, the line just simply ends up being an orphan that leads to a ferry dock,or you end up wasting time with backtracking over existing ROW (and wasting time) to get to 63rd Street. Unless you're willing to build a tunnel to maximize connections and usability, then I'd argue that the money should just go elsewhere.

There are other options. You could connect it to 53rd east of 23rd st, which would be expensive and also result in some backtracking, but not as much, you could build a new el through Long Island City to connect to 63rd street, which would make a shorter path and thereby save time, or you could connect it to the Myrtle El, since west of Metro Mall the line runs through some industrial areas anyway, but that would probably take the longest of all options. As a last option, you could keep the line purely a LIRR operation and connect the cutoff to the existing tunnels to NYP.

I don't think so at all. Corporate parking may not be an issue, but traffic and car insurance is.

Offices are closer to HPA.

And you need a place to load those summer Thursday and Friday Hamptons/Montauk trains unless you're moving them to NYP.

I don't see it closing.
