I also don't understand why they didn't let the B/D switch with the E at 7 Ave in Manhattan. I'm not saying that would have resulted in an additional useful service pattern*, but it would have made detouring in case of a problem easier.

Also, full crossover switches both north and south of W 4th Street on both levels would have been valuable.

* Though if you want a B or D to come in from Brooklyn but not go to upper Manhattan, you could make a loop through 53rd Street.
