If you are taking about the case of sending Brooklyn-originating trains (B,D,F) back to Brooklyn, then it would have meant using the 57th Street-Sixth Avenue terminal in the years before the 63rd Street Tunnel.

During the day-times, the 57th Street-Sixth Avenue terminal sent Brooklyn originating B trains back to Brooklyn, after 1968. As well as K or Kk trains from Brooklyn.

Prior to that there was always the option of emergency turning trains at 59th Street-Columbus Circle.
