Speed cameras work much more effectively as a deterrent when you have a mix of fixed location cameras as well as temporary cameras. With only 40 in the entire city and all at fixed locations, it won't take long for people to know where they are and now to avoid them. |

The speed limit on the highways in NY are ridiculously low and unrealistic. For example, the LI Expressway, Sunrise Highway and many other roads are at 55, 50 or various other unrealistic speed limits, which virtually no one goes. Everyone is going at least 65, which is a realistic speed limit for those roads. If they want to enforce speeding, with cameras, they will basically giving virtually every car outside of rush hour, a ticket for speeding. |

Ok, but the article and the thread are about NYC, where relatively few highways deserve a speed limit of 65. Maybe parts of the Clearview, the West Shore, and the Nassau (all mile of it). I can't think of anything else. |

Oh okay, I didn't realize the blue font was a link. That said, the highways in NYC should also be above 50. 50 on the Queens Midtown (LI) Expressway for example is absurd. Same with the clearview, and even some of the parkways. |

I think pretty much all the Expressways except for the BQE and Cross Bronx can be 65. The fact that they are congested is meaningless. The Belt Parkway and Grand Central can do 65 too among the parkways. |

No, he's referring to something like what DC has, which are portable speed cameras that they move around to different locations. A rotating camera just says "at this intersection with a known speed camera, you can be caught speeding in any direction as opposed to just eastbound, or what have you" |

There are plenty of Highways in NYC that can have a 65MPH speed limit being that the speed of traffic is 70MPH anyway.I was going to list all of those roadways but it's easier to list the ones that could be left as is: FDR Drive - Currently at 45MPH (It's a Roller Coaster) Jackie Robinson Parkway - Currently at 45MPH (Should actually be increased to like 55MPH) Brooklyn Queens Expressway - Currently at 45MPH (a lot of lane drop in and outs, as well as sharp direction changes) The rest all have traffic flows of 70mph when they're not congested. |

Which is interesting, if you monitor your speed when going along with traffic, it is usually at 40mph. Unless it's a Manhattan Ave where they have the synched signals which actually promote mobility. From my observations, sometimes out of sequence signals cause speeding as drivers don't like getting perpetually caught at red lights so they speed up to get through as many as possible. |

It's somewhat different. All 40 cameras will be active at all times(most likely). Though, NYC want's to have drivers play Russian roulette at locations which have the 20 rotating cameras so that they can "surprise" them and milk more money out of them.In reality, drivers will find out that those locations have rotating cameras and slow down no matter which direction they're traveling in. In DC, they have fixed cameras where drivers learn where they are located, as well as portable cameras that move to different locations throughout the city. One slick one they have is on New York Ave, just as it turns from highway to a Local Street. That would be like them putting a speed camera at the Troggs Neck and Whitestone Bridge toll plazas. You have approach highways where people are going 70MPH and then there's suddenly a 10mph speed limit where logically, drivers gradually coast down then use their breaks as they approach the booth. They all would be going 40-50mph over the "speed limit" and would receive a ticket in the mail. |

The Staten Island Expressway comes to mind.Keep in mind that "design speed" refers to standards at the time when said highways were initially built. A 70mph highway design speed for a car made in the 1930s-50s is certainly different than what's necessary for today's technologically advance vehicles. There were also many safety improvements made to the highways over the years. |

Correct....and very few roads withe the exception of the Bethpage and perhaps the jackie robinson are still in their original designed form. The primary factor in design speed is stopping sight distance, which is controlled by horizontal and vertical curvature. I doubt much improvement has been made in those departments. Lane width, shoulder width, and clear zone also have an effect to a lesser extent. Safety improvements like the addition of barriers and signs don't change the design speed. |

Some curves aren't relevant. That's what slower speed limit sections are for, with ample warning signs. The BQE's slow sections are so numerous and close together it wouldn't be worthwhile to allow higher speeds in the minimal straight sections in between. |
