Correct....and very few roads withe the exception of the Bethpage and perhaps the jackie robinson are still in their original designed form.The primary factor in design speed is stopping sight distance, which is controlled by horizontal and vertical curvature. I doubt much improvement has been made in those departments. Lane width, shoulder width, and clear zone also have an effect to a lesser extent. Safety improvements like the addition of barriers and signs don't change the design speed. |
