Keep in mind that "design speed" refers to standards at the time when said highways were initially built. A 70mph highway design speed for a car made in the 1930s-50s is certainly different than what's necessary for today's technologically advance vehicles. There were also many safety improvements made to the highways over the years. You have it backwards - a highway built in the 1930s with a 70 mph design speed might only have a 50 mph design speed under modern standards. For example, brake reaction time was 0.6 seconds in 1935, but it's 2.5 seconds today. |
