Most auto parts are metric because they decided it was cheaper that way. Lumber 2x4s haven't been 2"x4" in many decades (not that they rae a metric size either). So it only really matters in terms of driving and weather. That means we all get slightly confused when we try to figure out the cost of gasoline when we're in Canada. Other than that, it doesn't really matter. |

It's not like they aren't 2X4's exactly because of some vs metric system. So it only really matters in terms of driving and weather. That means we all get slightly confused when we try to figure out the cost of gasoline when we're in Canada. Other than that, it doesn't really matter. Totally agreed. Since most of the public don't want dollar coins, the banks don't carry them unless the customer wants them. As I posted before only the subway in Baltimore fare machines gives dollar coins as change for a 5 dollar bill for a $1.60 fare. WalMart tried giving coins as change, the customers refused them. |

Fortunately there are banks where you don't have to go through all that, and they exchange the nuisance change for bills free of charge (if you have an account there, even a small token account). All you do is throw the loose change from whatever container you have it in, into the machine which counts it, you get a stub, and you go to the teller to get real, usable paper money back. TD Bank is one, Teachers is another. |

Still not clear what's stupid about that. There are various state laws that say you must levy sales tax separately, and to the nearest penny. Here's an example. Suppose you want something to cost $4.60 after tax and your tax rate is 8.875%. Well, if you price it at $4.22 before tax, the price after tax after rounding to the nearest penny is $4.59. But if you price it at at $4.23 before tax, the price after tax after rounding to the nearest penny is $4.61. You just can't get to a price after tax of $4.60. So all state laws related to mandatory pricing to the nearest penny would have to be voided. I think that's what Dan meant. |

The way sales tax is paid by merchants in New York, you pay a percentage tax based on the total of taxable sales. The amount you actually collect (assuming you are not cheating) is irrelevant, though it should be very close to the amount due.Suppose you sell knickknacks at a flea market. You can charge "$5.00 including tax." It is your job then to work backwards to give the state its cut. Even if the tax is calculated at the register: Suppose something is $4.95 + 8.5% tax = $5.37. If you have to round down and charge $5.35 you "eat" the 2 cents. It doesn't come out of the state share. THIW. |

We are talking TOTAL bill. Add all your items together, and the TOTAL then comes up. That final tally is then rounded to the nearest 5 cents.Sales tax is not calculated on each item before tally, sales tax is done on the TOTAL tally after everything is all added up, THEN sales tax is applied. There is no way to price items to play with that total, as you will never know how many items of a certain item will be bought, as well as mixed with other items to come up with the total. |

No one is saying to say "$5.00 including tax".Your item is "4.99". You buy three of them, and then you also buy a 3.99 item, a 7.29 item, and a 5.99 item. Those numbers are then added up, and sales tax applied to that FINAL total. THEN it's rounded. There's no way to play with that final total, as that number will changed depending on how many items, and all the other different cost items in your shopping cart. I don't know what any of that has to do with "5.00 including tax". |

Do you have any idea how much it would cost to do this? We have millions of these dollar coins in warehouses that no one wants. Every couple of years, someone comes up with the bright idea for a new dollar coin. But, after the novelty wears off, people get pissed when they use a dollar coin by mistake, instead of a quarter. So, they wind up in the dresser drawers. And, don't forget that back in the old days, people hated silver dollars because they weighed too much. As for the $2 bill, it was never accepted. The US Mint, a few months ago, started selling $2 bills in full uncut sheets. Nobody wanted them, even as uncut collector's items. You can't "force" people to accept and use coins and currency that have been disliked for generations! |
